passports are whatever color that country wants to make them in a given week.  Of course the EU has gotten together & is making them one particular color these days - probably got a real deal from WalMart.  

If you want to use 50 year old examples of countries "passive with respect to evil" you might mention the Danes, the Soviets, and in fact it took the Americans over 2 years to figure out Hitler was a very bad man.  Not 2nd guessing here, because I don't think we should go willy-nilly into foreign wars.  

And perfidy among nations?  Jeez, where do we start?   Corruption within nations?  We've only been at it about 300 years, so we can act like virgins, hmmm?  

You want a radical thought?  Here's a radical thought:  Not too many things in life are one extreme or the other.  You don't always have to fight to the death or surrender.  Most countries have been co-existing (and miscegenating, which is the part I like better) on that basis for thousands of years - in fact, that sort of giventake is pretty much the basis of most marriages, too; and it's about the best we can do.  And some us have the RAM to deal with it.

The one thing I do very much agree with here is that there's not much way to deal with a fundie except give them the martyrdom they so dearly want.   Fortunately, the American fundies are real wusses, and taking their tax exemptions and sending them to jail is enough persecution to shut them up.  The muslims aren't there yet, and it's probably best to convert them into fertilizer.

The problem is that even that is not clearcut - if we miss the mosque and hit the library next door, the librarians can legitimately be pissed at our clumsiness.   And even fundies have mothers and otherwise reasonable relatives who think they're just misguided, and we have to deal with those guys, because they will otherwise become guerrilla informants and sympathizers.   The solution?  Treat them as pirates, international criminals.

So the problem here is accepting the fact that we are world leaders, and getting good at it, and that doesn't mean blowing penny ante fights with tinhorn assholes.   IMHO, we've made a big mistake in letting Osama define the fight as a religious war, instead of a war against crime.

Taking their women into slavery, sending the men to literacy camp, and teaching their children  baseball, is a much better plan.  You always have to think of the future.
