1. The assumption is that both mom and dad are adequate parents. 2. The kids spend 1/2 time with mom, 1/2 time with dad. 3. There is no child support in either direction. 4. At the end of each month, each parent totals up the $$ spent on behalf of the children, and each parent pays proportional to their gross income. 5. The kids live in an environment consistent with their father's lifestyle when with dad, and with their mother's lifestyle when with mom. The lifestyle's are usually defined by the education / skills they bring to market. In my case, these skills were well defined prior to marriage, and not negatively impacted by the marriage.
And ... it's immensely fair.
