I've seen the interviews you were referring to. The answer has a lot to do with culture. Oftentimes, the woman is shamed into silence because Japan has a lot of single income families with the male being the single bread-winner. We're obviously much more progressive on those traditional ideas in America today. But as a individualistic society rather than a collectivist one... yeah you can't have your cake and eat it, too. USA isn't Japan.

If you wouldn't tell your SO and you know it would hurt them if they found out, that's cheating. If you have their ok, or its an open relationship in general, then no, its not.
