The FIX is In....

Symantec issued a Jan. 7, 2004 update to NAV.

Somehow it messes up MS Word.  Takes like 2 minutes to open a Word file.  This only affects consumer editions (probably not the versions your employer's server uses).

It is a bitch though if you use your PC for work.  This is causing millions of person-hours of frustration until Symantec lets folks know what is going on.

Here is a workaround for the time being:

Open up your Norton AntiVirus application, click on Options, click on Miscellaneous, and uncheck Enable Office Plug In.  MS Word should open documents unhindered.

Peace.

Funny you should mention...

After getting my new virus definitions yesterday, I had Word hang up twice today.

It also has the same effect on Excel.  I couldn't figure out why both programs were taking so long to start. After doing your work around, both programs load up fine now.

stopped using Norton System-hog 2 years ago.
Try AVG by Grisoft or Panda antivirus.
You wont have the same issues and they find things Norton
misses.

and have another LiveUpdate available?

I had three computers crap out on me yesterday - the one that still works is (no surprise) the one which didn't get a LiveUpdate yesterday.

Manually run a live update.  (Many Megs of download)
It will require you to reboot your machine.

The fix seems to work.

If did the "workaround" above, you can choose to undo it, but I'm not sure that it affords any additional protection.

Thanks for the info.  One comment...

"...but I'm not sure that it affords any additional protection."

Your not sure?  Well be sure.  This plug-in scans the file
(e.g. Word or Excel) for viruses before it's loaded.  Of course it affords additional protection!

A fairly typical scenario is to copy files to a computer via a
floppy disk or CD.  If a Word document, say, on that medium is
infected, then you have just infected your computer!  The
plug-in guards against this.

stay uninfected,
