I was listening to an old George Carlin CD and had to post one of his bits here.

"I do not understand why prostitution is illegal.  Why should prostitution be illegal? Selling is legal. Fucking is legal.  Why isn't selling fucking legal?  You know why should it be illegal to sell something that is perfectly legal to give away?  I can't follow the logic on that at all.  Of all the things you can do to a person giving someone an orgasm is hardly the worst thing in the world.  

In the army they give you a medal for spraying napalm on people. Civilian life you go to jail for giving someone an orgasm.  Maybe I'm not supposed to understand it."

Saying something that's true about a person, no matter how harmful to that person--say telling his wife that he's having an affair, or the district attorney that he's embezzeled a million--is perfectly legal, but asking for money in exchange for not doing  this perfectly legal act is a crime!! A paradox.

But you're right.

Prostitution is the only crime that the act is actually legal.  Adultery is legal. Trading goods for services is not only legal, but expected (i.e., flowers, dinner, jewelry, etc).  In fact expecting sex without some sort of exchange is unheard of.  Yet the introduction of cash into the bargain puts you in jail.... Go figure!!!
