Folks,

Can anyone tell me if (1) my new car's built-in GPS system will keep a record of where I go...and (2) same question concerning my iPhone.  

In the hobby, there are places I would rather NOT be tracked, of course.

Any help will be appreciated!

..I can't give you much help on the iPhone and erasing data, but the GPS unit of the car, can't be erased by you.  It used to be that on some models you could turn the GPS system off, but not since 2011.  Even worse on the GM onstar system anyone who gets your onstar login info can download recent locations, which stay in memory for 180 days.  I own GM dealerships and we have had several requests to erase or disable GPS tracking and it can't be done.  Even disconnecting the battery won't clear the memory because your data is uploaded to the onstar servers every day.  I know of a hobbyist who had a wife that got access to his vehicle data and, well, the outcome was not pretty.  If you are worried about this, one of the options is a cab, paid in cash to a hobby appointment, not easy or convenient but much safer if you suspect your whereabouts will come under scrutiny later.  Probably not an LE issue since they would still need probable cause and a search warrant o get the info, VERY unlikely in a prostitution case, but it could be a very big deal with an inquisitive SO and divorce lawyers know how to get and use this kind of info.  As far as the phone, leave the iPhone at the office and use a cheap untraceable hobby phone while going to sessions, that problem is then solved.

You will have to turn it on for some applications to work properly. Car GPS, I do not know. I don’t think, it will upload your location information to another sites where it can be collated. Neither does iPhone for that matter.

You can also turn on/off location services on a per application basis on iPhone.

but not so much on the car.  On the iPhone check under Settings, General, then Location Services, and turn off GPS.  That easy!  Very similar process on Android devices as well.  Only option I know of with a car is to drive an older one

I didnt realize the GPS in modern cars is not “erasable.” All I know about them is what I read previously here on the boards. I have never used a GPS in my life! Then again, I live on an island, I drive a 90s vintage vehhicle, and I am single and got no one to hide from! LOL

.....I'm also a single guy with no one to hide from, does make it much easier and less stressful.  In fact, if I was ever caught and my name ended up on the front page of the local rag, my friends would shake their heads and say, "yep, we knew it".  It is getting much harder for our married brothers to stay under the radar.

I do have equally old GPS stuck to the dash...  A lot of my desinations are coffee shops, not my fauilt if there's a hotel down the block.  I always push the button so the GFS shows the last trip as home.  At least I can leave it shut off.  
A suspicious SO can always HIRE a PI or slap a tracker on your car.  LE can not without a warrant (according to a recent case) but a SO doesn't need a warrant to kick you ass to the curb...  
I'm looking for a foil lined security pouch for my civie phone for when I hobby.  My hobby phone will fit in the other belt carrier so no one is the wiser.

One solution for the car is simply to do outcall at the hotel if you are traveling and have a legitimate reason to be staying at the hotel.

It will generate a bill that shows every bridge toll you passed through, including the day and time.  Lots of ways for that to fall into the SO's hands.

Your iphone doesn't remember where you have been and yes you can turn off the location service all together if you really want to. The main thing to be aware of with an iphone is, do you have find my iphone enabled? And if so does your SO know how to check it? Other then that the ony location based thing to worry about is your recent searches in any GPS mapping application you may use. It may not tell her where you have been but it WILL tell her what recent addresses you have searched or navigated to.

When it comes to your car it will remember the same sort of stuff. Where you have traveled to and where you have searched. But in almost every case these systems CAN be reset or cleared.

Just don't use GPS navigation for the hobby unless you know how to clear it and don't hobby at all with find my iphone turned on if your SO knows how to use it.

displayed on that show, exists.  All of it.  I am sure that some have figured out how to tap into all the survailance cameras on a private basis, but know that LE already can, and sometimes does, tap into the feeds.

Watch out for your digital camera. Many of those have GPS. It can be turned off on many models.
Search their menus; the switch is there somewhere.

Yes but it doesn't keep a log of your locations other then to tag your photos with GPS coordinates. It also is not tracking while the camera is off. So unless you take a picture of your date and then that picture somehow makes it into the hands of your SO and they know how to check the metadata for the GPS coordinates.. you are pretty safe.

yes and yes...buy an old car and get rid of the cellphone and you will not be tracked..oh make sure you pay everything in cash as well..lol
