Disclaimer:  I am not a doctor and this post should only be regarded as personal oppinion.   I do feel it may be helpful.
Your immune system is your first line of defence against the swine flu and  other infectious deseases.  There has been agreat deal of interest in the role of Vitamin D in supporting and strengthening the immune system as shown in both popular and medical journals.

Vitamin D is created in the skin upon in the skin with exposure to UV rays from  the sun. However in the temperate and northern regions, it is difficult to get enough exposure to raise the level in the blood to a sufficently high level for maximum benefit.
Vitamin D is cheap - 2000 IU tablets can be had for as little as $.04 each.
My doc has stressed this to me and has put me on 6000 IU per day.  Since then I have had no colds or flu like symptoms at any time even after known exposure. (I know that one case is not proof of anything, but I am only citing my own experience.)

Vitamin D3 is the more active form should be and taken with meals.  It is fat solluble vitamin and so is better absorbed.

I appologise for any spelling errors and for the length of this post.

Vitamin D deficiency can cause severe obvious disease; this is rare in the US.  The deficiency in a less obvious, because milder, form is thought to be common particularly in northern areas particularly in the winter particularly in older people.  I have my wife, self, mother, and many patients on D3. There are fads in vitamins (C was a miracle, then folic acid, etc) but there is non conclusive evidence that a D deficiency may play a role even in heart disease etc.

As to the swine flu, every year about 20% of Americans get the flu.  This flu is in its earliest stages and seems fairly mild AT THIS STAGE.  It may later evolve into a more severe disease.  I hope that by then there will be a vaccine. I am shocked that a single sick child leads to a school closing.  This seems borderline hysteria to me.

Of course,a well rounded diet is always a good idea. Fruits and vegetables have vitamins and phyto chemicals that aid in immuno competence.  Vitamin D supplementation is a good idea especially if you do not get a lot of sun or drink a lot of milk etc..  I always check my patients vitamin D levels after they have been on the supplementation a while to see what their level is. I have yet to find too high levels.

Thank you for asking me to join in.
