I've had luck with these:

www.farerus.com
www.priceline.com

also, try Southwest Airlines, (not sure of the url,) they have good pricing and routes, and they make money, so the airline is likely to still be around when you take the flight!

Good luck,

Anya

I use www.travelocity.com, and www.orbitz.com.  Avoid www.priceline.com, as there are too many instances where you can get stuck.  Also, Anya’s right about Southwest (www.southwest.com).  One problem with Southwest, though, is they only fly into airports with low landing fees.  For example, in the New York area, Southwest doesn’t go to JFK, Newark, or La Guardia.  Instead, you’d have to go through McArthur Airport in Islip out on Long Island.  That’s a good two hours from the City in high traffic periods.  Good luck.

for figuring out availability, try

expedia.com
travelocity.com, or
orbitz.com (owned by major airlines and you have to register, kind of obnoxious)

once you get an idea of prices for your routes/dates, then check the specific airline's sites, especially discounters who aren't on some of the above boards.

southwest, airtran and jetblue are some of the candidates.  many airlines give a discount for using their website to book tix.

Hope this helps - I don't use priceline, etc. cause you don't know when you'll fly and whether you have connections or not.  Actually hotel are best booked through net

I think you will be happy with Hotwire.com

Unlike priceline, you don't have to give a bid.
If you have time on your hands, you can utilize some of what FrankD just wrote, Hotwire, and then give a low ball bid to Priceline.com. Just make sure you limit your flight connections when you compete your itinerary requests. Good luck! I guess your hinting at an upcoming "tour" of the US. Bravo!
You seem like one classy gal.

Jetblue is definately the way to go...I think they fly direct from DC to Las Vegas.  See you soon.
