Special friend?

A favorite lady of mine recently called me a "special friend". I've also seen the term used here many times. I hope I don't offend anyone, but doesn't special usually imply a handicap as in Special Olympics or special education? I hope she isn't saying that I am handicapped in some certain area! Anyway I was just wondering if this term actually means anything or if it is just a method used by the ladies to keep you coming back.

... you are pulling our collective leg or the Neurotic Poster Child of the New Millennium. You make Woody Allen sound like a resolute stoic. Please! You are special, pal, accept it. She likes you, she really likes you! LOL

Oh, I didn't realize there was another "whyme" on the board! This was a first time post for me. Neurotic Poster Child does fit me though!LOL

... I must have had you mixed up with one of the other hopeless neurotics (myself included) out here. You know the difference between a psychotic and a neurotic? A psychotic thinks 2 + 2 = 5; a neurotic KNOWS that 2 + 2 = 4, but it just kills him!

Neurotics build castles in the sky ... Psychotics live in them!

Multiple definitions.

Special in this case means important on a personal level (not looking it up).

The word has also been adopted as a way of referring to the handicapped without calling them handicapped, but that doesn't stop it from having it's original meaning.
