The mistakes are due to the assumptions that they "don't discuss" as to why their assumptions are valid.  who else gets to write fantasy - and call it reporting?

No one will ever compile realistic figures about anything to do with the hobby since the vast majority of what we spend and what the ladies make is never reported, admitted to or even talked about beyond a very small circle.

I guess the media won't stop trying to sensationalize the topic for as long as it attracts readers but really, they don't have much of a clue...

I am totally depressed.  Cannot hold my head up... will probably never leave my small cave again....   cannot stand that I have not even approached half of this...

I'd look at the concrete evidence, and extrapolate.

Probably the most concrete evidence is advertising.  It's reasonable to assume that a certain volume of advertising supports a certain volume of business.  

You'd have to be careful how you developed that model.  Eg., it takes nothing to spam Craigslist forever, and that's likely to indicate underemployed providers as much as employed ones.

OTOH, big forums like TER, etc probably include raw data that could be used to make certain estimates.
Blind surveys might be used to develop some types of estimates.

I just counted the escort ads on Eros. There are over five thousand ads  running in the US right now. If the average provider averaged even a thousand dollars a week, a gross underestimation IMO, EROS alone would still account for over $250 million a year.
