Silicone vs water-based

I'm no lube expert but I always thought water-based lube was generally preferred? Maybe not as viscous as silicone based but better in all other areas such as re-application, safety, ingesting, overall mess and allergy-free.

At least that's what I was told by several civies and also in sex shops around here in the bay.

i have been using  PJUR silicone lube for over a dozen years now with   (insert large number here)  ladies and its been great..  many are surprised no taste during BBBJ ....    HOWEVER .. recently my first time with a civilian and the next day her entire genital area including deep inside vagina, totally inflamed.   turned out she was allergic to Silicone.

apparently Silicone allergy is real but extremely rare.   i told her i would pay for her emergency room visit and drugs.  will take a week for the constant pain to go away  :(

well no matter how rare something is .. when it happens to you its 100%    so nothings perfect.

Yes, silicon allergy is rare, according to the NIH, but it's common enough so that if you go for any procedure where silicone rubber gloves are used or there is silicone in any of the products used they will ask you if you have an allergy.

That's odd. I can't remember ever being asked if I was allergic to latex, and they're always wearing latex gloves in the OR, and it's a more common allergy than silicone (basing this on anecdote).

A helpful post to raise awareness about such issues and also a good reason to act responsibly: go to a doctor or ER! Tell them what it was and don't beat around the bush (assuming she wasn't shaved). Don't wait to see if it goes away on its own.
.
There have been other allergy / sensitivity warnings over the years. A partial recap:

Have a safe and healthy 4th of July! Don't get burned by fireworks or sparklers. And don't get burned by any allergic responses!

about 25 years ago i wound up with a civilian heading for a weekend in vegas .. our first time about 20 minutes after climbing into bed my whole body broke out in a painful rash.   turned out she drowned herself in some whacky perfume. and i tend to be allergic to such. i even apply after shave to my clothing rather than directly on my skin.

well needless to say we ended the weekend right then and flew back to LA ..   never saw her again.   these things happen.

In the last 40 years since I discovered pjur, I've gone through gallons of the stuff, 250 mL at a time. Because of how little you need and how long it lasts, I always think I just bought a 5-yr supply.

If I bring it to a session, I always tell the girl up front, "Not oil. Silicone." I demonstrate the safety in ingesting it. And they are surprised by the lack of smell and taste. Come to think of it, your civie friend, she didn't have an oral reaction?

I did buy a 500 mL bottle once. This was in a sex shop 20 years ago and I think the price was $99. This really sexy and exotic BBW came out from behind the counter to talk to me. I so regret not trying to touch her because, as far as I could tell from what she was saying, I could have had her for the asking in the dressing room. She gave me half off on the pjur. Now I get it off ebay for right around that price when buying two 250 mL bottles.

and a sheep ran over to the fence as I was passing by.  Just because she seemed "easy" did not entice me to try to have sex with her.  A BBW would have gotten the same reaction from me.   Lol       Fat may have been exotic some time ago, but now it's pretty common and in your face in the media.  Just take a look in the latest VS catalogue.

I knew when I wrote it that it might be better for me to be more specific. Instead, I went with lazy "BBW." And most BBW are 'fat.' I should have used 'thick' or something.

She was attractive, 5'5, regular looking large boobs, A WAIST!, and then large hips, ass, and legs. You still may not have done her. Were I in a better place, I'd have done her in a minute, the minute she started talking about how she's not getting much interest from men and then started talking about her body, especially her legs, and that she thought her big thighs were a turn-off. She was wearing a to-the-floor black sundress thing, so I couldn't see her legs.

This was before I started whoring, which almost immediately broadened my horizons -- I doubt I would fail to act today under the same circumstances. Back then, and all my life, I had been a snob about music and women's looks. Thank god that's over. In retrospect, I missed a lot in both music and women owing to my high standards. (No way do I regret dating good looking women, but I missed out on some good variety.)

in case anyone is interested .. and you probably are not .  that was the first time we were ever together ...  we have been in touch nearly every day since as she goes to EXER and MDs.  her pussy / vagina is totally inflamed 3 days later and very painful and still her response to me is ..    don't sweat it,  things happen,  please don't worry it will pass in time, its nobody's fault.    amazing .. just because of that might quickly become my ATF   (well that and those natural DDDs )    i will be covering her out of pocket MD / emergency expenses and a little bit more.

she told me knew she was likely allergic to silicone but she obviously was lost in the moment ... especially after 15 min of DATY  LOL .. and didn't think to ask about the lube when i reached for it.

Good on you! I like her now, too. I may never get to fuck her or fondle those breasts, but I'm putting her on my favorites list. LOL.

At least that's what I was told by several civies and also in sex shops around here in the bay.

There are four main types of lube.
http://bestlubezone.com/lube-guide/
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/blog/how-do-you-use-lube-with-condoms
.
1. Oils include mineral oils and vegetable oils. Never use an oil lube with latex condoms. The oils will dissolve or weaken the latex.
.
2. Silicone oils are best thought of as silicones to avoid confusion with the oily oils. Do NOT use silicones with silicone condoms or silicone toys.
.
3 and 4 can be lumped together as water soluble lubes but they are different.
.
3. Lubes like K-Y and Astroglide are glycerine (glycerol) based. They are water soluble and easily washed away with water. They can also dry out due to absorption of the water by body parts or evaporation. You can add a little water back into the mix and things should get slippery again.
.
4. Another kind of water soluble lube contains PEG (polyethylene glycol). Many pre-lubed condoms use PEG lubricants.
.

.
Back to the OP and in general about all the lubes: Watch out for additives and such. OP's friend might have a silicone allergy but she also might be allergic to a perfume or added aloe or other additive. Also, some silicone oils are really expensive, probably because they are highly purified. Remember those foods that say, "Processed in a facility that also processes peanuts."?  A trace of peanut in a non-peanut food can set off an allergic response. I assume something trace in a lube can do the same.
.
Whatever you do, do NOT use Sriracha Sauce as lube!

BE CAREFUL!  READ THE LABELS! FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! And carry an Epi-Pen.
