Serious oversimplification

goin fishin meant camping (yes, in tents) beside a lake or river.  It meant the process of catching fish, cleaning them and actually cooking them yourself.  Granted, this also meant some discomfort and not a little physical work.  All geared to "activity."

As I walk the streets at noon - to get a little exercise - I cannot but help notice the number of people too FAT to walk - they have to use a "scooter" - the number of people too out of shape to sprint for the elevator.... and these people are the same ones who are on cardiovascular, diabetic and GI drugs....  oh, and some are on anti-depressants....

why is it that we deliberately work to decrease the physical activity that would keep us healthy?  This "camp out" described in the "news story" is an excellent example of something that could be used to induce health, is now used to promote more eating with less physical activity.... why?  What is next - hobbying with no movement?????   argh......   Someone like Bond, Emma Bond will probably find something wrong with my complaint!

Want health care reform - require that everyone demonstrate some effort on their own behalf to be qualified for health care benefits - exercise - even if it is a "walking diary" it is better than 60 min in front of the lobotomy tube...  what say all?!

Flame away, I have this Flame retardant green suit....

Definately agree!
I watch each younger generation become more and more fat, with more and more illness. I hate to see it happening in my own family, but I can only drag them outside so many times before I become depressed.

I endorse the concept.  If it can be done in a way consistent with civil liberties, then that would be ideal.  It's one thing to have insurance coverage for people who are victems of misfortune.  It's quite another when people let themselves deliberately go, and then ask others to foot the bill.

and it'd take me a while to find the 1%.

It's so bad, I've seen HMOs paste signs on their vehicles, "Eat your fruits and vegetables"; and then we pay for drugs and scooters for people who don't, and thereby turn into massive tubs of lard.

What, we need an HMO to be our mommy?  We need freaking doctors to tell us how to live? To go outside and get some fresh air, and god forbid, maybe some exercise too?

you can nudge, badger, bullyrag your own spouse & kids somewhat, by making activity fun, and making them understand at an emotional level that the body feeds the mind.

If they want to drag their heels, the worst thing you can do is let it get you down and follow in their footsteps.  Go out and do your own thing.  Bike around, go swimming, clean up the garden, or whatever.  It's really more mental health than physical.

As I leave my appointment with the doc, telling me that I need more exercise, to lower my BP and cholesterol levels, I reach the desk to schedule my follow-up, where his morbidly obese worker waits on me.  What's wrong with this picture???

But we are getting larger by the minute.  I now hate when my SO goes shopping for clothes.  It's not about the money, but about how they don't make anything small enough to fit her, that she can wear in an office setting.  She's threatening to gain weight just to fit with our society.  I remind her that I'm fat enough for the both of us.

While there is plenty of truth to the fact that people don't exercise enough, just being on TER and spending the type browsing the forums and posting on threads points out one of the reasons why it isn't all about people just being lazy.

Our society, and the world in general, has changed in so many ways that promote a less physically oriented lifestyle and more mentally oriented one.  Did you have an XBox 360 as a kid?  No, you went outside and played...but probably in a yard or on a street where you didn't have to think about your kid being exposed to drugs or pedophiles.

Additionally, as marketing and industry has grown, concepts like fast food and junk food have not only been introduced and marketed to death, but have become almost a necessity and most families don't have one parent who stays home and focuses on just raising kids and cooking and cleaning.

I could go on and on about this, but my point is that while yes, we need to, as a country, exercise more often, it may not be that simple.  Saying that our national health crisis is related to people just being lazy is like saying that people being laid off their jobs is just because they didn't make correct career choices.  It isn't that simple.

there will be flaming by people who really need medicine. I have many past injuries from being in the military but that doesn't stop me from certain physical activities (wink) and keeping a positive attitude. Shoot, I was older than any of the other ladies when I joined the military, and I had the highest PT (physical training) score of not only my company but the whole battalion. Does this tell you something?

Hugs,
Ciara
