I am beginning my move to the Caribbean in exactly one month from today....OMG!!!! Is this really my life?
Anyway, who has been to Martinique? For that is where I will be moving. Can anybody offer me any kind of advice?
My job is a nine month contract, but renewable after that time; however, I will be starting grad school back in the states next fall. I want to make use out of all my free time (I'm only working 12hrs a week!!!!!) traveling, etc. Are there any islands in the Caribbean that you guys suggest I visit?
This is my running joke:
"What should I do today? Lay on the Caribbean beach? Or should I go explore the rainforest? Perhaps I should just hop on over to Barbados because it's only this far -- away on the map. Good lord, I have some tough decisions to make."

Guadaloupe.  Nude beaches, idylic unspoiled towns, buses that play Bob Marley, nude beaches, a shoe store on every corner, nude beaches, very friendly people, no poverty at all, a really neat aquarium with the cutest little fish that has a human-like face, nude beaches, a volcano, great food, palm tree lined nude beaches, lots of water sports activity places to go to...

Did I mention the nude beaches? (The women are drop-dead gorgeous, and many of them are lesbians who make out on the beaches.  I kid you not!)(Check out the French patrol boats just off shore.  All the crewmates spend all their time watching the beach with binoculars!)(Guadalupe is part of France, a full department whose natives are French citizens and can vote.)

God, now I want to go there right now.

Also try Saint Lucia, best bananas in the whole world, really!

Aruba was fun, but very commercialized.

what you described sounds just like Martinique! Martinque, just like quadalupe, is an overseas department of France. I had the choice of taking this job in Guadalupe, Martinique, la reunion, corsica, or mainland france.
in one month, I will have a french social securtiy number.how cool is that?
Anyway, I cannot wait to visit the nude beaches of guadalupe! Thanks for the advice mr. fisher!!!
AHHHHHH!!!!!! Just one more month!!!!

one question: human-like faces on fish?????????

This fish just sat there staring back at me and his face was as human as you can imaging being on the body of a fish.

I must have spent an hour staring at it; and that's a lot when you consider what else I could have been staring at.

It looked a bit melancholly or perhaps wistful.  It was a moment I'll never forget.

Since I'm flying out of Orlando, I will be spending my last days in the states in Orlando. Will I be seeing kiddo there?

Most definatly if you get me the dates so I can arrange my schedule.  PM me with the dates.

"Working" in the caribbean for just 12 hours a day?  Can I come with you?

Seriously, good for you.  I enjoy reading your posts and I hope you continue on this board.  Let us know how it goes.  I've never been, but here read the wiki on Martinique.  It sounds like a nice place and it's a good thing you know French (both kinds). ;-)

Just don't get abducted!

Say, how do you get it any way?   Also, what are you doing there for twelve hours a week?

when you get tired of nude beaches (I know I wouldn't), try St Johns.  It is one of the US Virgin Islands and most of it is a national park.  This means lots of isolated beaches and beautiful unspoiled places to hike and enjoy.  Another relatively undiscovered island is Vieques in Puerto Rico.  Used to be a navy base so it is also relatively unspoiled and absolutely beautiful.

while jumping off a waterfall in the rainforest. Perhaps when I return to the states, I'll start providing again :)

Visted off a cruise ship.  Yes, go to Barbados!  Enjoyed more than Martinique....
