as far as I can tell, it is caused by the all the errors these browsers encountering from the the new TER, especially from CSS (cascading style sheets) they generate a lot of warnings, undefined, and errors.
I use Macs mostly, and I find that Firefox (newest ver.) would become very sluggish freezes, or some times crashes after being on the new TER for a while, if you check the "Error Console" in the Tools menu you will notice it is flooded with Warnings/Errors/Undefineds, mostly related to CSS3 incomplete definitions.
That happens on the Mac and PC versions of Firefox. It also happens with Safari on both platforms.
IE on the PC side if you are running in the debug mode, will notice the same errors.
By the way, you can see the same results on Safari for the Mac if you enable the Debug/Developer mode.
I am on an Apple by the way. No comments on PC and Windows!

Haven't had the problem at all. Mostly use Safari 5.0.1. Occasionally use Firefox.
You may not be quitting Safari completely and closing the window and using Private browsing. It is possible for Safari to become sluggish after a while in Private mode and not completely existing. When you just close the window, the cache doesn't get flushed.
I quit completely at least once a day.
