but the rest of me is up here in Boston and I recomend Boston especially in the fall as the foliage here is breathtaking if you can make it up during Columbus Day weekend. I'll even give you a quick tour of it along route 2.
Of course, I do have an ulterior motive. In wanting you to come here.

...you'd hardly want to miss a side trip to Los Angeles, the nation's media capital, the center of women's shoe-shopping, the site of the Getty Museum, and -- oh, yes, I almost forgot -- the hometown of Yours Truly, who would very much like to meet you!

I vote for Providence or Boston and if you arrive on the 8th, I will pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel 
San Fran is great and I live nearby
Why? Great food..wonderful sights, good (but not great) museums, bridges, Pacific ocean and lots of hills to keep those calf muscles taut. You will need sweaters; remember SF can be chilly in September.
For big modern hotels I'd go for the Omni or Le Meriden. There are some neat B&Bs but probably not good for business rendezvous.
My favorite restaurant is Gary Danko's but there are many other fine places.
Other choices:
New York is wonderful in the fall but the weekend after labor day it may still be too hot and muggy.
Same with Boston. Although since you are from a warm climate these cities may suit you fine.
I would also consider Montreal, Quebec City and Vancouver...probably not great "business cities" but charming and beautiful.
The local SF board is a good way to introduce yourself to hobbists in the area. I guess the same goes for most of the other cities too.
