Heard her speak in Boston last night on a book tour. Regards of your politics, she is very funny. She told a story about how sodomy came to be against the law in Texas (just overturned).
It seems that several years ago, the legislature appointed a blue ribbon commission to update Texas criminal law. The commission had recommended the existing law against sodomy be removed from the books. The commission resommendations had passed the Senate. When they got to the House, one guy got up and "shamed" the other members into putting the homosexual sodomy law back in the code (nobody wanted to be on the record as voting against it). At that point, legal advisors told the House that the law would then be unconstitutional since it made homosexual contact illegal but permitted heterosexual contact. Suddenly, the mood of the debate changed and the "boys" weren't so sure they were doing the right thing. Then another legislator got up and shamed the legistlature into making hetro sodomy illegal too (nobody wanted to appear "unchristian"). The amendment passed and the two sponsors were laughing and high fiving each other on the house floor. Ivins said that the speaker turned to the sergant at arms and told him to arrest the two sponsors for high fiving because it was "now illegal for a prick to touch an asshole in Texas"
