Tim died today of a heart attack after collasping at NBC studios today. He was the longest tenured host of NBCs Meet The Press, televisions longest running political news show.
He was only 58. He had just returned from Italy on a short trip with his family after his son graduated college. He had returned to work today to prepare for Sunday's show.
One of the few real Journalists (yes capital J) left in the business today. His work on behalf of the American People will surely be missed.
about his relationship with his Dad, "Me and Big Russ" that was released on Father's Day a few years ago. His relationship with his Dad (still living I think) was legendary. He was an honest, and fair guy. He will be missed.
Tim was a longtime resident of our neighborhood, before he moved to luxury digs out in Potomac a few years ago. During the time I knew him (slightly) he freely gave of his time to neighborhood issues, was a wise and friendly resource for neighborhood causes, and over the years I never heard one word of criticism of him as a person or as one of the very best TV reporters and analysts. In my book he was the best.
Genuine broadcast journalists left. He will be missed along with others who have passed, Walter Cronkite, Harry Reasoner, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, all names anyone would be pround to be associateed with.
He frequently spoke to his dad through the camera at the end of his show. It seems like they were quite close. He was great at what he did, and I will miss him every Sunday morning.
He was also a Buffalo Bills fan, so I always knew that there was another one.
I think I'll go call my father...life is too short.
Tom's voice was quivering and cracking as he broadcast the sad news about Tim's passing and the notes on his life. He obviously was upset with having to make such an announcement about one of his colleagues.
I enjoyed listening to Tim's commentaries during election time. He was very insightful and knowledgeable on both the candidates and issues.
But Tim Russert was truly a very good journalist and way too young to go this early in life. I watched a segment where some of his colleagues were speaking about him and they all were extremely emotional and it is truly a tragedy when someone with that much talent and life is taken so abruptly.
I work tangentially in the business, knew Tim the way you'd know somebody you met every year at a convention. There was not one ounce of posing. What you saw on TV was what you saw at the diner. It was one of his best points.
Tim Russert was one the last true TV journalists who brought genousness and believabilty to the profession. He never let his personal bias's affect his interviews/interogations of his subjects on "Meet the Press", and other venues under NBC. He was old school, neutral politically when he had to be...the mark of a quality journalist in the political realm. Only Mile Wallace on CBS compares...Tim's unfortunate passing at only 58 makes this a sad day. My heart goes out to his family...
I have grown up watching this great man every Sunday morning provoke political interest in all of us. As a young gen Xer I didn't have much interest in politics, but I was in the routine of tuning in to become aware as he made it so available to everyone.
CBS News anchor emeritus Walter Cronkite wrote: "Tim Russert was a giant in our field — a standard-bearer of journalistic integrity and ethics. His masterful interviews and round-table discussions are legendary."
This was the follow up book to "Big Russ and Me" I would recommend both books to anyone. When this book came out I met Tim Russert. I have met a handful of important people but none have even close to the genuineness and warmth that Tim Russert had. Great person who will be sorely missed. I was heartbroken upon hearing the news on Friday.
