The thread below on use of a credit card for hobbying started me to wondering about some money handling decisions, which in hindsight, look unwise. For anyone that want to answer. What is the largest amount of cash that you have travelled with for any reason? And how far did you have to travel to reach your destination. Mine was $7,000 and about 1500 miles. It was just after I joined TER, I was psyched, after reading reviews, to see several providers over a few days and did not want to do big daily withdrawals to pay for the multi-hour visits. The whole travel thing with loaded purse proved to be nerve racking (although events on the ground at the distination made up for it). I made it, had fun but now prefer to travel with much smaller amounts and do moderate sized ATM withdrawals to get what else I need.
It depends where I'm going Chicago vs. Omaha. But I never carry any more than $500.00, even when going overseas. My financial instituion has a pretty liberal ATM withdrawal policy, so it does make it easier to withdraw a decent amount of funds.
I don't have any problems, because I do not look like a guy who would be carrying large amounts of cash.
I flew to Denver to meet a client and he gave me $10,000 in cash. I took the entire amount and stuffed it in my bra to go through airport security. I flew back home to Phoenix and it was the only flight I've ever taken where I never closed my eyeballs once. I usually am sleeping as soon as I make sure the plane is in the air and don't wake up until the tires touch back down. Not that day!!
For me, I kept feeling that I was somehow going to be tagged as a drug currier, eventhough I do not fit any logical profile of one. Given that I like irony, it would have been great if I had been pulled aside and asked to explain why I was carrying such an amount of money - would not have been funny then, but once out of it, I would have been laughing about such a situation for years to come.
I'd say it was 200G's when I went to Vegas for a few days with the crew. I was up another 500 g's playing crap and with a few lucky spins at Roulette, I was at 1 mill. give or take a few clams.
Well, being the big sport I am, I took the fellows out on the town. You name it, we did it and the broads were hotter than Chinese mustard and yours T truly spared no expense. We drank and ate and sucked and fuc*ed with the best of them
Nikki,Nettie,Montana,Tuson,Albercurqie and San Antonia Rose brought not only a few stiff creases out of our pants but slid me back to 500 G's and then I decided to put all of it on Black and
When I was young and dumb working in College for a job that basically put me in danger every day, I carried $150K once in cash. I used to carry $20K-$30K just about every day but that really didn't bother me. By the way, I worked for a financial institution as a guy at the bottom of the totem poll.
The coolest thing about this is that I got to deposit a $1k bill once. It caused a big stir at the bank even though I was depositing over $2 million in checks! I also never felt in danger carrying this money every day until I had to get the $150K that one time.
Carried it for a political party as campaign funds 15 years ago ... will never do it again. But it was an interesting experience - to say that you've carried a cool mil in cash.
You expected the B-line to get you through BU in under half an hour? What the hell have you been smokeing? Those BU jocks can't get away from the doors, so no one else can get through.
Federal law now allows cash to be seized without proof of a crime or intent. Thanks to the "war on drugs" any large amount of cash can be seized even by local LE. The citizen then has to sue and prove the money had no drug relationship. This came about when confiscation of any property used in the drug trade became law. Many local departments have enriched themselves tremendously thanks to these seizures. It is especially dangerous to carry large amounts of cash at airports where LE is already searching for other items. Amounts such as $3-5K have been seized with no recourse. LE know they can tie the case up in court and it would cost about that much for the citizen's legal fees to retrieve the funds. The greatest effect of the war on drugs is loss of civil liberties. Government is always willing to bypass the Constitution and can do so if it convinces society of a "greater" evil. Sad.
This practice is apparently endimic at the Honolulu airport. HPD undercovers "walk and talk" through the terminal and, if a traveler happens to fit the individual det's "profile," the traveler will be subjected to detention and search, including the contents of one's wallet. It's all about drugs. Nice to know, since no airline can stop more than two Middle Eastern males on any particular flight. The way this scam works, the traveler must prove to a court of law some months in the future why he or she had the money. I always travel with $10k in cash, and have never had a problem, but I'm high profile and cops leave me alone. It is ind of a quirky way for the HPD to make extra money, but it happens; the ADVERTISER reports cases each month, along with the outcome. Sure, some people get their money back, but they have to fly back to Hawaii and hire an attorney to make their case. Remember Plato's famous question: "Who will guard the guardians?" Good damned question!
I was concerned about the very thing that you mentioned. I flew and all of us here know what that means after 9/11/2001, the only thing I had left on me were my socks, trousers, and shirt. Everything else went through the scanner. I was concerned that the bills that I had would be picked up in the rather fat wallet and I would have it all taken away, not to mention being "detained". I was so glad when I landed at my destination and got into the rental car.
This was not me but years ago I drove a cab for a living and had a fare who was spinning a tale about winning the lottery and I was suuuuure...I had picked up the man at Greyhound and he sure didn't look rich
When we got to where we were going he opened his duffel bag and it was filled to the very top with hundred dollar bills...according to him it was $150000
He apparently was traveling the country avoiding all the family that came out of the woodwork once they knew he had money
He was waaay too open with letting someone know he had this money...I really doubt he was able to last very long before someone stole it from him...especially traveling by bus all over the place
