That's the LAST TIME I blow off a Superbowl halftime show!
first VH1, now MTV ... targeting the lowest common denominator once again
some viewer on CNN this morning said it best: "pandering to our trailer-trash culture"
Oh boy, can't wait for the Grammy's to see what kind of crap they are going to pull out then (no pun intended)!!

What exactly it says about our society that people are so freaked out and offended by a glimpse of... a BREAST for heaven's sake. Like children everywhere have had their innocence destroyed... by a BREAST.
Not by guns... not by violence... not by poverty or hunger that kids in cities are face to face with all the time... certainly not by watching FOOTBALL with blood flying, people swearing screaming and going crazy... nope...
But by a *breast*.
*blink*
Poor Janet... she looked totally p*ssed at Justin, too!

It was planned. It's just what Janet and her team of marketers want, she has a new album coming out and this controversy is a terrific lead in for her.
Remember the Paris Hilton video coming out just weeks prior to A Simple Life?
Nobody ever heard of her before that.
Was that an oops, or a planned assault?
My family didn't mind it, but I know some bible thumpers that are really pissed off about it. John Ashcroft will be calling for the Navy Seals to make a full scale attack on Justin and Janets homes.
I actually believe that the old stuffed suits at CBS and the NFL had nothing to do with this, but the thought that MTV's choreographers and marketeers, and Janet, and Justin didn't fully plan this is completely laughable.
If it was an accident, I don't think Janet would have had on a designer pasty - not the kind of thing that one wears as underwear which isn't being worn to show off.
The piece that Janet wears is an actual piece of piercing jewelry that IS worn under the clothes. It exposes the nipple, which is what a pasty is designed to COVER.
And yes, people wear designer underjewelry every day.
Like most of us here, I'm against censorship of nudity and against most prudish behavior. However, the danger is that it creates a certain insensitivity. I think one is more excited by seeing breasts or watching two girls kiss if this is something that cannot normally be seen. The fact that nudity and sexual behavior is something that is hidden and a little naughty is partly what makes it exciting.
I think that if nothing is taboo anymore, in a way, nothing will be as exciting either. By making nudity mainstream, MTV is inadvertently making it commonplace. The same is true for Vivid which is making porn so glitzy and glamorous that, in some ways, it's not gritty and dirty the way sex should be.
Yup. Our society will show people blowing each other up and killing thousands, but god forbid someone sees a body part that's actually attached to a person...
I doubt Janet was pissed. It had to be planned. Clothes don't rip that perfectly unless they are tear-away clothes that are intended to be ripped. Also, she looked shocked, but didn't try to cover it with her hand.
I don't care what kind of exhibitionist you are... If someone yanks one of your cups off, the first think that happens, before you think, is that your hand comes up and covers it. It's instinct. The only reason she didn't is because she was ready for it.
Of course, maybe we'll get to test this theory of mine. ![]()
This country is waaaaaay too uptight about this kind of stuff.
UNCONSENSUAL, so even to a liberal like me, it becomes offensive.
UNCONSENSUAL is bad then... ?

I'm glad she did it. I hope other performers will come out and follow the SKIT. The more the barrier is pushed, the more we are dis-sensitized. The more we get that violence is more of a problem than sex the more mature our society gets.
There's also a double standard in this country. The porn industry rules our entertainment dollars, more than all of the NFL/MLB/NBA put together and certainly more than what holywood makes a year. Yet it operates under a criminal type of atmosphere becasue people are afraid to speak about it.
Now that's what i don't understand.
It's not the fact that a breast was exposed, it's the context. If you think this was not planned you are far too naive!
I don't have children(except for my yorkie) but I do have nieces, nephews and a young lady who I consider my goddaughter who was molested at a very young age, and due to her ensuing vulnerability to peer pressure of the prolific rap mentality, she was molested again. (Listen to the words, cause I refuse to any more.) Unfortunately I met her too late to instill my "prudish" mentality on her. Rather my mentality of being "appropriate". She who was molested way too young, and with the whole fourth grade peer mentality of blow jobs, and so forth.
At the tender age of 17, she spends her time in therapy, trying to avoid drugs and fighting a horrible eating disorder (God forbid she grow breasts and shows that she is a woman, vulnerable to more abuse) which also puts her life at threat. How cool is it that the guys she now can date can rip off her top, sanctioned by the likes of Idol, Justin? She who is still trying to deal with not only becoming a woman but dealing with the raw "I own you" attitudes of many "men" out here?

it seems a lot of people (even in this thread) are confusing the issue of this choreographed stunt not being such a big deal for us ADULTS vs. it not being a big deal for young KIDS (precisely the demographic which would be watching the premiere sporting event of the year)
puritanical American attitudes towards sex and the naked (female) body in particular (witness Ashcroft's statue) are laughable by European standards (even for European kids) so this sort of thing has a tendency to get a "so what" shrug by the more, shall we say "liberal" among us ... but it's a different matter entirely for American youth who have a decidedly "unhealthy" education (not to mention attitude) about sex which, as you rightly point out, the corporate pop/rap-culture zeitgeist exacerbates (the CNN viewer was referring to the trailer-trash YOUTH who watch MTV not the adults)
maybe, i'm just getting old ... it seems a few years back i would be one of the ones saying "so what" but the more this kind of thing happens the more sickened i get by it (and i don't even have any kids)
Exactly! I do have kids, and I have no problem with their being exposed to nudity. In art, at a nude beach, ect. It is the inapproriate sexual behavior and/or inuendo that I do have a problem with. This was a very inappropriate publicity stunt. And I hope there are big fines imposed by the FCC all around
The problem I had with it is the fact that he ripped her top off. It was to close to emmulating force, as in rape. Regardless of wether he wants to be or not Timberlake is a roll model and kids have a tendancy to emmulate their heros. I'm not saying that every kid that looks up to him will go around ripping girls tops off but it does desesatize violence/force twords women a little further.
The other problem I have with it is, if a parent chooses to expose their kids to nudity, either through art, movies etc. that's fine as it is with a parent that chooses not to. Here no one had a choice it was made for them.
Just my $.02
Seldom
But then there's the sex and race bias...
If it'd been Jan ripping off Justin's shirt and HIS nip showing, no one would've batted and eyelash.
But because she's a woman and she's black, it's a big deal.
You can clearly see Timberlake reaching with his fingers to grab hold of the bra piece and pull it to the precise timing of "gonna get you naked.." etc.
No way was this unintentional.
But it sure is gonna get them all sorts of free publicity.
This did happen in Houston, which has been cracking down on exotic dancers as of late. Him, since Justin did touch, and they were closer then the required distance, and she was dancing, could Janet be prosecuted?
Face it, she has to compete with the national pop-tarts (Brit, Chris, etc), so she has to do something naughty.
Personally, I thought it was more tasteful than the lesbo kiss between Britney and La Madonna, but then again, Madonna reminds me of an old, dirty sneaker in need of disposal and Britney looks like a tramp I wouldn't have plugged in high school for fear of the clap.
Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

This was one of the best Super Bowls ever played. Yet, the topic of conversation is that pathetic stunt. Janet Jackson's biggest crime is stealing the limelight from the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers (Carolina played a great game).
I'm not convinced she was in on this alone, someone made that "wardrobe malfunction" and I doubt they would have done it on Janet Jackson's authoritay
.
Personally, I think the FCC should impose the maximum fine on CBS. Moreover, the NFL should not renew CBS's game broadcasts or allow them bid for the Super Bowl rights for 5 years. AOL, one of the sponsors of the halftime show should demand their money back.
Otherwise, look forward to even more "shock" moments. The Grammy's are coming up...
First the CIA makes a bad call on Iraq's WMD, then they don't warn us about Janet's boob, even though it was obviously part of a larger conspiracy stretching to the top of CBS (the Columbia Boobcasting System).
