Just a note to remind you that unless you don't give a rat's ass about your own confidentiality, don't use the same moniker for TER as you might on other discussion groups. Google puts your username out there, right, left and center. So, if the old missus knows that you are "xyz" on the "Old Hot Rods Group," don't take the lazy way out and call yourself "xyz" here on TER. Googling a username will show every darn place it's been. Of course you may already know that, and I'm just stating the obvious.

It doesn't necessarily follow that all hits on a given moniker are the same person.  Though, from the standpoint of having to explain that logic to a spouse in an emotionally distressed state, it doesn't really matter ... your advice is still sound.

My original TER moniker was the same as an e-mail name I use frequently (and my wife knows it well).  I nearly s**t in my pants the first time I saw the google search results.

. . . in my moniker means something. If you google it with the B expanded you'll see many instances of it; almost all of it is me. I abbreviated for TER and other hobbying boards.

Actually, there is no reason for this to be so, as the TER admins can prevent Google (or any search engine) from searching the site with something called a 'robots.txt' file.  I'm actually surprised this was not implemented already.

Admins, what do you say?

I just googled our screen name - there's 10 pages of stuff - guess nobody will have any trouble finding us... Thanks for that link, it could be usefull.

Just another point to never post anything you don't want public.

This is not entirely true.  While you can use a robots.txt file, and google will honor it, there is nothing that REQUIRES that search engine or any other search engine from honoring it.  Short of shutting down access to the server requesting the web page, there is no way to prevent spidering.

Yes, that's true, but the important thing is that Google and the rest of the major search engines DO honor it.

Googled my user name and most of the hits aren't my posts.  Apparently there is at least one other Boone out there!  Wonder if I've gotten him in trouble?
