My thoughts exactly on hearing this this AM...

Such a renaissance man may not come along again for many years.

Among other distinctions, he wrote my favorite train song, not a mean feat given how many songs fall into that category (Dylan's It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry, The Dead's He's Gone, etc.)

Here it is for anyone interested, from Station to Station (a train themed album, actually)

Parting gift to the world. Been listening to it all day. Love it. The track Lazarus is haunting. Glad I saw him on the Glass Spiders tour and the Concert for 911. Totally unique artist. RIP.
