There is always a risk you take with having unprotected oral sex.  Vaginal fluids can increase your chances of being infected only if the person you are with is infected.

HIV is transmitted through blood, breast milk, and sexual fluids such as cum.

Herpes can also be transmitted through oral sex to either partner.

Other Std's that are curable with medicine can also use your mouth as a breeding ground.

I say if you are neervous about std's and want to decrease the chances of getting something there are products out there to protect both partners.  Dental Dams, are used over the vagina, and come in different flavors, also you can tear open a latex condom and use that too.

If you think you might have contracted something the best thing to do is go and get tested.

You know one thing we ALL have to consider in measuring our risks is that it is virtually impossible to assign a specific percentage type risk assessment to any one specific sexual activity... let's face it, most people do not ONLY do oral sex, or ONLY do vaginal sex, or whatever the next "how risky is this?" question will be. No offense intended but it's starting to get old seeing people asking over and over again what risk is related to certain activities... get out their and do some research and take responsibility for yourself, your health, your well being... I've posted a gazillion links (and so have MANY others), tons of info, and more about this issue.

Whew, what a rant, and that is really directed towards the original poster and not to you, sammy... and to all the posts next week and the week after that will ask about BBBJ, and more oral, and should you wear two condoms... Please gentlemen!!!!! TAKE CARE of yourSELVES, you cannot expect anyone else to be responsible for your health. Asking questions is a good thing, but not even bothering to make an effort for yourself, isn't. Do you really believe everything you read on a message board?

Now, that said, how many lesbian women (who were not IV drug users, or hemophiliacs in the 80's), do you know who've given each other HIV by fem/fem oral sex? And no matter what studies you read, remember that they can only isolate people to study them so much... there are zillions of factors researchers cannot control and have to take into account to give an *idea* of risk.  Unless they use chastity belts... :)

IF you have done some research in an effort to protect yourself and simply do not understand the results of that research. However, really... honestly... are you going to trust YOUR health and safety to the opinions of many anonymous members of a web board??? Really truly????

I do not mean to be short, BUT I do feel that for ANY sexually active adult in this day and age it is our responsibility to inform ourselves of the risks that exist, determine which risks we will accept and which we will eliminate, and be PROACTIVE in protecting our health and safety. These "is this safe, is that safe" questions get asked every other day here and I'm really seeing a trend of people who do not even BOTHER to try and find out the truth about these things for themselves... I'm sorry but with something this serious and important to our lives, that really disturbs me! And really, it should disturb all of us.  I have provided links to info re: safe oral sex so many times it makes my head spin, maybe some people will read it eventually! ;)

Good answers.  I recently had sex with a provider had been in monogamous relationship and std was/is my worry also.  I'm intelligent and aware of the std's and issues.  Anyone have any comment on 2 questions I have: 1) as provider, how often do you get tests (I would think it would be your chief worry along with LE fear and wacko's); 2) what percentage of providers have std's/HIV

The frequency with which providers get tested varies incredibly. Some just don't care, some are very paranoid.  What % of them have an STD?  I don't think we can ever know.  Oh sure, there is always some health department "expert" who has his estimate, but we don't know how many providers there are and there is no reasonable way to sample them anyway.  When they go in for free tests they will probably lie about their work just in case LE is there trying to catch them.

The truth is that while they claim the STD thing is a good reason for making prostitution illegal, the illegality itself makes the STDs harder to deal with and therefore much worse.

Do you know what the only stupid question is?? It's the one not asked..

You know, if you get enough opinions one can sometimes come to a conclusion as to weather or not continue on his, or her, path. I know it's not safe to perform any kind of sex, and yes, I read your postings, and checked out most of your links (thanks for the info), and yes I do "BOTHER" to find out, thats why I asked the question. I'm just trying to find someone who can make some God Damn sense out of all this!!!!!
