Made by a first time film maker Siddiq Barmak from Afghanistan about life under the Taliban.  The story is about a 9 year old girl who working-class mother and grandmother dress her in boys' clothes to evade the repressive commands of the Taliban. After the new regime abruptly closes the hospital where the girl and her mother work, the daughter must take on the role of son - legal male companion to her mother - so both may move freely through the streets seeking new work. The girl, an incredable actress, is renamed Osama and struggles to keep up her guise while adapting to military training and other new social and religious roles;  The picture, is aweful, funny, and discussions about sexual attitudes and mores will hold anyone's (horrified) interests.  I recommend as worth seeing.

interesting, where did you see it?  is it in wide release?

it sounds like an Islamic YENTL (sans Babs and the awful singing)

Part of a program at the Museam of Fine Art in Boston.  The film isn't comparable to anything Hollywood I have seen.  Most of the actors are non-pros.  The girl playing the lead is amazing.  There are some crowd scenes that are hard to watch.  Filmed in Kabul   There is a scene where one of the mulluh's is teaching the young boys how to clean themselves up after cumming in their sleep that has to be seen to be believed.  The whole scene looks like the far side of hell.
