In my experience, Europe is more tolerant than the US but it's still not an ideal situation here.  In the UK, this madam would be charged with 'living off immoral earnings', I assume she's being charged with the French equivalent.  It made the news here because of her background and the amount of money involved.

Unfortunately, hyprocrisy and intolerance exist in Europe as well as the US (we're just less likely to get arrested!).
