It's a very uncool word--hobbyist. kind of gay if you ask me.

I like "John" much better.

I was chatting with a civilian yesterday about the hobby (Geez - how quickly I succumb to the lingo of the sport!), and he asked why the term "hobby" was used define this activity.  I have searched the messages and the Newbie board and can't find any info on this.  Do you "veterans" of the sport have any insight or info on the origin of the term "hobby" as it relates to this activity?

Because .... as all of our girlfriends and ex wives will attest ...

WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH AT THIS TO TURN PRO!

And also ... because the terms addicts, obsessives, stalkers, perverts and sleazebags   have already been assigned to Drug users, Stamp Collectors, Rapists, BDSM and The Democratic National Comittee, respectively.

especially since if we did turn PRO then they'd have to PAY US!

but i always thought the origin of the term "hobby" had to do with the "collector" aspect of it ... like another "notch on your belt"

men can be fanatics about collecting almost anything: stamps, model trains, hot rods, diamond cufflinks, you-name-it ... you throw p*ssy into that mix and stand back ... their OCD-laden "collector" traits will go ballistic on your ass!

btw, someone asked me, how many other hobby/enthusiast msg boards do i belong to (i guess implying how come i have so much spare time for this board). i'll answer honestly: NONE!  while i have many hobbies (some of a very technical nature, which would make for ideal discussion fodder) i don't bother msg/chatting on any of them (no time really)

i only aim to excel in THIS hobby  --- screw golf!  LOL

Be careful singleton, you're treading on hallowed ground.

When asked, 80% of men stated a preference of 4 hours of golf vs. 1 hour of erotic time with SO.   Some of the comments:  4 hours with 150 acres of perfectly groomed golf course vs. 1 hours of 150+ pounds of unkept SO .... I'll vote for golf.

There are more, but you get the picture.

as in naked babes for caddies? heck, i say why not have "Putting for Bambi" instead of "Bambi Hunting" which is just too low-brow for anyone (btw, CNN says it was all a hoax to drum up publicity for some cheap-ass video like "Girls Gone Wild" - and all the media outlets evidently fell for it - suckers!)

ahhh ... now look at this baby here (Golf Magazine's CenterLinks of the Month) ... doesn't it make your mouth water?  ;-)

Just make sure your balls are clean.

I'm a model railroader myself.

But trains are very Freudian. Think about it. You have this long thing that propels itself along. Every now and then, it enters a dark tunnel and then comes back out again.

Yeah, but it comes out the other side of the tunnel, not the way it went in.  Explain me that.

BTW, how big are you?  HO, 027, etc.?  Do you call it Lionel?  Or American Flyer?

Very Freudian hobby.  Even Hitchcock used it in a film.

It's simple really.... do you see an escort everyday of the week? Probably not.  Like most of use, you probably visit them only on occassion... kinda like a hobby. It's just a nicer name coined a while ago which didn't attract the attention of LE.  It's like some of the other terms used... coffee, golf, sans translator, provider... if you're active in the hobby, then you know what these terms mean... if you're not active in the hobby, or are LE, you may not know what they mean and therefore they can't be considered incriminating.

Just like anything else, terms evolve with the progession of time.
