Actually, my understanding is that the woman mentioned in the paragraph before Mary Magdalene was first introduced, also named Mary (they had a bunch of those back then was actually a provider. Then the some Catholic priest tied that negative connotation to M Magdalene (that she was a prostitute) in order to discredit her due to the potential issues below. Its thought is that MM was a wealthy supporter of Jesus and that she may even have been an apostle or the wife of Jesus (and the holy grail is the child of them both - MMagdalene being the "vessel" that is spoken of)....source material is my memory of a PBS special and an Atlantic Monthly article from a couple of months ago, so its definitely a paraphrase...
and btw, i KNOW this post i'm responding to is a joke, i just thought this was interesting fodder....

he died. People who came along later and successfully appropriated his views for their own purposes often had the view that sex is dirty and wrong, but I doubt that those were his views.
Mother Mary had been on his case for years to find a nice Jewish girl and settle down, already. "Look at you, you're over 30 and what do you have to show for it? Whatever happened to this big carpentry business you were always talking about? I don't know why you couldn't have listened to me and been a doctor or a rabbi. You should have a whole house full of little messiahs running around, but no, you have to wander the countryside fishing for MEN, of all things. Men! And you with your twelve friends, all men themselves, I might add. Twelve men isn't enough for you, you have to go fishing for more? What about that nice Mary Magdalene? You're too good for her, I say, but you're getting older and let's face it, your father (rest his soul) was no spring chicken when he was your age, let me tell you. So settle down already. Oy!"
There is a noted researcher, Glen Kimball, (often appears on "Coast to Coast" radio show) who claims Jesus was married. He also says he wasn't poor (as heir to the throne of David, his family was loaded) and Joseph wasn't a carpenter as we know it today, but more like an architect. His website is ancientmanuscripts.com
