Wow, saw this movie tonight, and it was awesome. For those who like their cinema deeper than mainstream fare and who live in a major metropolitan area that is screening this movie, see it!  Stephen Frears has directed a great movie full of grit, reality, memorable characters, natural tension and humor, a love story, and social statements.  A thinking person's movie!  Check out the review below:

Of course, if you want something more along the lines of "mainstream" summer silliness, you don't even need to pay $9 to go to the cinema.  Just look at the goings on below in Montgomery, Alabama today:

even though I am a huge fan of Naomi Watts since 1996.  Merchant/Ivory really dropped the ball on this one.

i loved Naomi in MULLHOLAND DR ... hers was a tour-de-force performance thru-n-thru ... alas, she went "hollywood" in THE RING (ironically enuf)

[mild spoilers ahead]

SWIMMING POOL was fantastic! ... a month later and i'm still trying to decode various elements of it (who exactly was the old man gardener, was the very last scene a surreal hallucination/flashback, what was the deal with the midget lady and what "accident" she was referring to, who the f**k was the impostor "daughter" and what was her part in the accident if any????)  ... btw that newcomer ("daughter") Ludivine Sagnier is going places, i guaran-f*cking-ty it

and Charlotte Rampling has got to be the most alluring, exotic, classy meta-actress in the history of cinema ... i loved few other recent films of her: SOUS LE SABLE ("Under the Sand") and ABERDEEN (one of the best depictions of alcoholism on film IMHO)

i mean my god Spec! did you notice Charlotte's hot-bod in her nude scenes in SWIMMING POOL? ... this woman is fifty-freaking-eight years old (58) !#%!  ... FIFTY EIGHT!  (aging providers take note)

Did you see it at Hillcrest? :-)

sweeter, softer, gracious, more innocent type.  She has too much history and sorrow in her eyes which like a vintage is quite attractive to sophisticated gentlemen.

As far as Ludivine Sagnier is concerned, she has so much charm, sexual energy and acting chops at her young age, unless somehow she chose the path of Sophie Marceau (had affair with older French actors) or Isabelle Adjani (too much focus on European films; bad choice on US films like Ishtar), she would do great in US.

You must have loved "Un Affaire Pornagraphique".

The younger guy in "Habla Con Ella" by Almodovar, I don't remember his name, kind of has the same look, although he played his character as more effeminate.

I can appreciate a woman's perspective, you imp, so bite me.

When I saw "Un LIASON Pornographique" (got confused with the American title), there were several middle aged women who commented on how alluring the unassuming Mr. Lopez was (which gave even ME hope! :P, and he had a sleazy charm in "Dirty Pretty Things".  He also has nice eyes.  He kind of reminds me of a swarthier Andy Garcia, who even I think is a good looking guy.

Thankfully, not all women think Brad Pitt is the only type that is attractive.  It is kind of like how much I would like to nail Janeane Garofalo!
(go ahead, Single...)

Yes, yes, yes I loved Une Liaison Pornographique. Why cannot I answer an ad and have someone like him show up? That movie is all the porn I need. I hated him in With a Friend Like Harry, and wasn't thrilled with him in Decalage Horaire, which recently was released. He's still so yummy. My second favorite French actor is Daniel Auteuil. In my own little fucked up world, I pretend I'm in a polygamous marriage with those two. I don't speak a word of French, so everything they say to me is romantic.

And yes, Dirty Pretty Things was good, but I found Audrey's accent to be unbelievable. I loved the part when Juliette raised her hand about sucking dick near the end. Hahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaa...so funny and so me.

Lastly, did you see Lucia Lucia with Cecelia Roth?

He is mon actor favorite!  "Un Couer en Hiver", "Lucie Aubrac", "Girl on the Bridge", "Queen Margot", "Les Voleurs"...I could just go on.  The pairing of him and Isabelle Huppert (don't get me started on her) in "La Separation" was something I had only dreamed about...too bad that movie wasn't as good as the actors.

As for "DPT", I agree about her accent, but she played the role well...and the though of the sacchirine Amelie giving head poetic justice.  Juliet's bit in the parking lot was a howl.

I have not seen "Lucia Lucia", but I remember Senora Roth from "Yo, La Peor De Todas" and her Almodovar movies...she is sexaaayyy.  I had a girlfriend once who spoke Spanish and she used to go into these long, passionate improvisations in Spanish when we would make love...God, that was hot!  ¡Fuera, fuera!

IW, you need to get your arse to San Diego, we can see Bill Maher, you can show me Lucia Lucia, and then you can do your impersonation of Juliet, okay?

Hahahaha! I was just in San Diego last Friday - Tuesday It's so beautiful there. I would stay in SD forever, if only my friend didn't tire of me so quickly. I want to take over his condo on Front St., but he's not having it. Shame on him!

And you have such wonderful taste in French actors! Cecelia is soooooooooooooooo sexy. She's very, very attractive. Hell, she could talk to me for hours, and I'd enjoy it. Hate to disappoint you, but I'm slightly less glamorous than Juliette. I'll be in San Diego again soon. Perhaps I'll be there for Street Scene. Or if we can get married, I'll move there. That's only if Singleton approves.

:-)

now speaking of brilliance (yes, Daniel is brilliant!)  one of my ATF screen writers of all time is Paul Schrader (TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL, etc) and one of his "beacon" moments of brilliance "on screen" was in the dialogue he wrote for AFFLICTION (1997), where the misogynistic old patriarch (played by James Coburn) in the midst of a heated domestic dispute (with Sissy Spacek) is so enraged that he's almost speechless and the only insult he can muster up (perhaps the greatest insult in his twisted mind) is .... (i'm paraphrasing from memory)...

James Coburn: "you [misearable] nothing, you weak ... you ... WOMAN!"

it's absitively brilliant. talk about nuance in screenplays ... "WOMAN" ... LOL  [sigh]  :-)

ok you two ... now run along and git yourselves a trick-pad already!  ;-)
