1)  It spreads STD’s

According to a study a few years ago, STDs were less frequent among providers than among women in general, if you do not include street walkers.  Since an STD would potentially harm their business, the non-streetwalkers tend to have safer sex than women in general.

while i'm getting myself all riled up ... :-)

what are the arguments for making prostitution illegal? i mean, aside from the puritanical religious aspect - are there logical and legitimate reasons for considering this criminal activity? this may be choir-preaching, i ASSUME most of this board's regulars are pro-hobby.... but can any of you make good arguments against legalization? i'd love to hear them (and tear them to pieces if i can :-)

Public welfare - health and safety of the public.  Prostitution promotes the spread of STDs.  Many providers do not practice completely safe sex.  Due to the high volume of sexual encounters that providers participate in, the risk of STD is increased, for hobbyists and nonhobbyists.  Consider the wife, girlfriend or one-night stand who gets an STD from a hobbyist.

Sure, I’ll make a hypothetical argument for you.

1)     It spreads STD’s
2) If you have an SO you may give her an STD.
3) It could cause the breakup of a marriage and family.
4) It is addicting
5) Being addicting one could get himself in debt, causing many problems.
6) It is degrading to woman.
7) Some of us, both ladies and gents are looking for love in all the wrong places.
8) Men will not know how to interact in real relationship with a woman.

How’s that? Take your best shot. But please don’t think I take all of these seriously.

             The only valid point you make, but if legalized could be kept under control with mandatory testing.

2) If you have an SO you may give her an STD.
             And she may give me one because she's fucking her personal trainer, who BTW prefers men which explains his attraction to my manly looking SO.

3) It could cause the breakup of a marriage and family.
               So can money problems, schizophrenia, and laziness.

             Tobacco, alcohol, and eating are addicting and legal. To some people driving a car is addicting.

          Again, eating, tobacco, alcohol,=(health problems) add gambling.

          Why, and in the minds of what type of people?

          True, but has no bearing in this argument.

            According to Dr. Phil, men don't know how to interact in relationships anyways. (ridiculuos answer to equally foolish argument)

I've heard it said many times that the main objection to prostitution is not the act itself, but the other elements it draws to an area.

I think the meaning is this:  many prostitutes are unfortunately addicted to drugs.  Therefore a high volume of prostitutes in your neighborhood will increase the volume of drugs circulating in the area.  The more drugs there are, the more muggins/shootings and other drug-related crimes.

I really don't think it's the prostitutes themselves that bother people so much, it's more the overall degradation of the neighborhood as these darker elements seem to tag along with the pros.

Oh, and combine that with this countries puritanical origins that just stubbornly refuse to die out, and I think it will be a long, long time before prostitution is legalized and de-stigmatized.
