Check this from today's NY times. (I bet our Attorney General is saving this one in his scrapbook of "how morality should be legislated")
[[FUNTUA, Nigeria, Aug. 19 — An Islamic high court in northern Nigeria rejected an appeal today from a single mother sentenced to be stoned to death for having had sex out of wedlock.
The woman's lawyers said they planned to file an appeal to a yet higher Islamic court. If that failed, they could appeal to the Supreme Court, where the case would force a showdown between Nigeria's constitutional and religious authorities.]]
How about we legalize sex for $ here in the US and send a percentage of sales as foreign aid to victims of persecution in other countries? Just kidding, I know we need it to build more missiles and maybe for SS payments someday to old farts like me.
Ashcroft has already been mildly chastised by Senator Leahy, a Vermont Deomcrat, for spending an inordinate amount of time and resources busting a New Orleans escort ring. Ashcroft has been busy busting other escort outfits as well across the country. All of ths post 9-11 mind you.
Makes you wonder where his priorities really lay. For the record, Ashcroft holds voluntary prayer meetings for employees at DOJ headquarters. One would hope that prayer time is during employee's break period. Fact is though that is federal government property, paid for by we tax payers. MfSD.
Stalin has murdered more religionists than Hitler who only focused on one religion at a time....
Clever tactic though... point a finger at the noisy idiots diverting attention from the quite wet work operating efficiently behind our backs....
Comparing Islamic madmen to any religionist (Incluing Louis Farakan) in the US is unjust. But I guess justice has little to do with the pait you use as long as it covers everything with the color that neest your approval....
he should ask for tolerance, a word that the religious right knows nothing about...I'm really amazed that this group is as powerful as it is..Take the 2000 primaries, the far right candiates (Gary Bauer, & Alan Keyes) did horrible, they were at the bottom every time. Subsequently, they withdrew rather quickly...If there are so many RR members out there, why did their two "top dogs" do so poorly...
Yet, Limbuagh's show is still on the air, & Ann Coulter (who HAS to be the biggest bitch in American history) has a top selling book, so sadly people still flock to these wackos.
But I respect him though I don't agree with a lot of his positions.
That type of tolerance is sadly lacking from many in the left when going after what they see as the evil right.
John Ashcroft is apparently the new Ken Starr according to these self described guardians of freedom. Ashcroft is apparently personally driving up and down streetwalker strolls to point out working girls to be busted by the evil cops. No smear is too out of line apparently.
Pleease. Lets leave just a little bit of the political partisanship at the door. So what if John Ashcroft and others have voluntary prayer meetings. They are not holding them as representatives of the government and as such are not establishing a state religion. The ban on the establishment of a state religion does not mean that the state religion becomes official athiesm or agnosticism.
Politicians of all stripes have been bellowing about family values and morality since Augustus Caesar. Augustus even banished one of his daughters to some distant place because of her behavior. Meanwhile when having dinner at the palace, Caesar would often sneak off with some Senator's wife and when they returned Caesar would comment on the lady's virtues to the entire gathering including her husband.
If you watched Alan Keyes short lived Television Program on MSNBC, it reflected far right position. He is African American, yet, he vehemently opposed Nelson Mandela! How far to the right do you want?
What is utterly suprising to me, is how in the world he was admitted to Harvard!!! He is against affiramtive action, so I hope he didn't get there that way!
Dude, you're not making much more sense than Straight. For the record, I'm a registered Republican, you twit ( :
I didn't say anything about legalizing the hobby in this thread. I said that we have an Attorney General who seems as interested, if not more so in busting escorts, than he is in fighting terrorism. And the fact that he holds prayer meetings at his office does bother me, becasue I'd prefer he spend more time doing his job, protecting the citizens of this country. MfSD.
Well, Augustus had a load to bear: supervised majesty – supervision kindly provided by the Senate. He had to represent, embody and purportedly behave as the living portrait of Rome (it is quite the same today, UK's Windsors and the rest of the lot, and unfailingly, digging deep you may find different colors of shenanigans.) The Roman Senate, in turn, knew that the public's perception of Augustus's majesty was essential for the health of the institution, their own, and the country at large (however one might see them as fair, or not so) and actually did the opposite of what you are saying, they actually provided cover (alas, sorrowful word on this board.) Augustus passed to posterity as the greatest Roman emperor.
Then, and now, it is all about politics. Some other poster was inanely (or disingenuously) pointing out about no Democrats fronting for legislation on legalizing "entrapreneurial sex". Who in the hell would do that in today's climate (btw, the latter the result of a successfull political strategy)? Apropos, flash forward to recent past, and someone still has to explain to me republicans' patriotism. I didn't see much care about the health of the Executive on that Lewinsky Blow Job free-for-all extravaganza. Did you, in fairness? Not to mention installing a chimpanzee in the White House...
