In cinema, there are 10 predominant genres : comedy, adventure, crime,sci-fi, fantasy ,horror,
western, musical, romance & animation. There seems to be a gulf in movie tastes between men & women: in my case, there's a definite dislike of musicals & romantic films ( unless it's a tender hardcore porn flick-------lol ). Unless dragged by a civvie gf, you couldn't pay me to see a "chick flick" like "Juno". On the flip side, I'm sure many providers won't see a very grim & violent film such as "No Country for Old Men", or a downbeat arthouse drama.
My question for providers & hobbyists : of the 10 genres I've listed, is there a type of film you adamantly refuse to see ? On the other hand, do you think there are film genres that men & women can both enjoy ?
My views on this >>>>> I saw that movie (No Country for Old Men) No big deal...
Movie are just movies. A place where our Imagination plays a part in them. I have a wide range of likes and dislikes.
Maybe some ladies wont see a violent movie, while others may. That is where they need to compromise, Gusy check out Chick flicks" and they know it will make the GF or wife happy. So WHy can't the ladies just watch one. The guy is next to us- Boy, do I love a Strong man.
However, it's nice to be real and have choices- and be honest about what style of movies we both like.
I love suspense! then again, I can always see a good comedy movie. Waching movies from diferent cultures really do it for me. Oh and a good XXX> are always nice too. Get mopre ideas.
I love the movie "Meet JOE BLACK"
or Lion KING -hehehe.
even the message in the movie "Good Will Hunting"
Anyway, we are all unique individuals.
Ladies love Pretty woman. I do too.
Or Mulin Rough*

I'm kinda far outside the norm. I love film and there really isn't a category I can't enjoy (though I don't like weak and badly told stories no matter what the genre). As something of a geek, I certainly enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and animated films, but I also enjoy musicals and even well done romantic comedies. (I confess that it takes an exceptional romantic comedy to win me over, because most of them out there are the kind of paint-by-numbers entertainment that most sitcoms are on television.)
So the unsatisfying answer to your question is: No, there isn't a single genre I would boycott. Tell me a good story and I'm there -- regardless of what category the film is sold under. Give me really unique storytelling -- MEMENTO, for example -- and then I'm really into it.
And while there is a generalization that guys like action films and women like "chick flick" romantic comedies, truth is that everybody is different. I don't drink beer or watch football (guy stereotype), but here in the Midwest every woman I know does!
Scifi.
First off, I'm not sure that "Juno" should be considered a chick-flick. Yes, it has the cutesy romantic elements, but is really more of a comedy/drama than chick-flick. I must admit, though, the main drive for me seeing it was because writer Diablo Cody is way cool. Her memoirs as a stripper are amusing and heartfelt.
Regarding chick-flicks, let me just say this: I have never seen and refuse to see "Titanic."
"Fight Club" is one of my all time favorite movies, along with "Resevoir Dogs" and "A Clockwork Orange."
But if I am going to see a movie, I want to be entertained, so since I love to laugh, give me a good comedy any day.
I won't say that there is nothing I won't watch because I love movies, but the one type of movie that typically makes me cringe because they are all similar and all poorly made it seems is the "romantic comedy". They all make me a little sick. There are very few that have any real depth or substance.
I watch all other types of films and I have seen movies in Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, French, Italian, Portugese, Norwegian, German, Palestinian and more. Additionally I watch movies from all eras. I love a good movie.
I prefer the classic movies of the 40's-70's, particularly the films of Kurosawa & Fellini .
I loved No Country for Old Men. I also like foreign movies. Any of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films- Delicatessen, City of Lost Children. I liked Amelie and The Piano Teacher. Those are all French, but there are a lot of good Italian and Chinese movies too. Oh! Who saw Into the Wild? That was an adventure movie, but it was so different from the like of Indiana Jones.
Just saw Into the Wild, on DVD, this past weekend. Very sad when he comes to the end and discovers that true happiness can only be experienced with someone.
I was also very sad at the end. He learns the lesson, but can't make use of it. When I got home I hugged each of tetras and my pleco. I love those guys, *sniff*
How funny my daughter and I just rented some movies and she wanted Juno for one. I was like no way lets get No country for old men The ending was Insane though. I don't like overly sappy chick flicks. Old circa 30's &40"s musicals yes. Action drak drama like NCFOM, (really good one) Spiral. Die hard Terminator ,Exterminator, Gladiator. My ATFs' Texas chainsaw masacure(oreginal) I piss on your grave. 3rd house on the left and last but not lest Night Of The Liviing Dead.
Don't particularly care for romantic comedies where there is a lot of tension over anticipated miscommunication. I do think both men and women can enjoy murder/mysteries and psychological thrillers together.
LOL just kidding.
His Scorpio Rising is still a high point of my teen years.
I even met him once.
seriously, he has a very strong message in his films that some might find scary. Personally, I found his films to be very interesting when I studied them in film school.
And if you have to ask, you wouldn't understand!
I have pretty broad tastes. One of my degrees was in film so I can adapt. Love the B-movies, sci-fi, horror. Don't like French films; too many shots of clouds and angst-ridden teenagers put me to sleep.
I'll always follow Joe Bob Briggs guidance. Lots of explosions, 5 heads blown off, 7 breasts, gratuitous idol worship...count me in.
Its a great horror film.
working title is "Hnndjobs In The "Hood."
My favorite movie of all time is an obscure Russian version of Dostevski's The Idiot, made in the 1950's.
I went with a friend and expected to find it boring, but I was utterly facinated by it and it even motivated me to take a class on Russian literature which is still my most favorite class.
My second most favorite movie is Midnight Cowboy. There is no finer display of human kindness and passion than that flick.
My third favorite is the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. It is just a feast for the eyes and ears and is funny as all get out.
