Because you may have family members that share the plan ... Unless you don't care what / wich numbers show up on your bill.

I have google voice on it and it gets free texts. Haven't used the google voice number as of late though cuz the phone itself has plenty of texts

yes... but is easier to track your actual phone if you use google voice.  
also..the number dial will show up on your bill.
