OK, my .02.  Re Dodge, all I can say is I've got a '99 Ram 2500 with the 8-liter V10 they based the Viper motor on.  85K and still tows my 24' race trailer without breathing hard.  Not a single major repair, so no bad words about Dodge from me.  Still, the mechanics I know all drive Ford trucks and swear by them.
WAIT A MINUTE!  WE'RE ON A SEX SITE AND YOU'VE GOT ME TALKING ABOUT TRUCKS!  YOU FUCKING PERVS!!!!
PS:  The guy who builds my racing motors makes a good living rebuilding the top ends of Subarus that blow head gaskets.  Oh, and I love my Audi.  Mercedes drive like fucking trucks, and the myth that they hold their value at trade-in time is,well, a myth.

He and I work in some of the same aspects of the automoitve industry.

We talked about certain lines that are crap. Land Rover. Service bays are always full. Jaguar. My techs wouldn't drive one to go to the grocery store. Kia? Why don't you just give me the money, and I'll carry you on my back to your job.

Subaru, you're good. Honda's cool. My mom had one FOREVER!

I personally drive a 17 year old TBird. 120k miles. Spent $1100 for headpan gaskets about 5-6 years ago. Other than that, I'm good.

Care to share your difference in our  educated opinions?

Good: BMW and Chevy

I love the longevity of BMWs given proper care. I've had a couple and gave both away to charity still running fantastic at 280k and 340k miles respectively. All I had to do was adjust the valves, change the oil and replace basic stuff. Other than that? Totally trouble-free. Too bad they switched the styling to broaden their appeal.

I've always appreciated Chevys and they have great reliability. But the best part really is that they are relatively easy to work on and have a lot of interchangeable parts. I like modifying vehicles to incorporate mad scientist experiments, and Chevies are great for that.

Bad: Dodge

I'm sorry, but they suck IMHO. Dodge automatic transmissions are crap. I've dropped tons of 'em. And anything with 4WD? Forget it! Dodge 4WD is a joke. Total money pits.

Great masculine styling though! Trouble is, they are like a provider with an appearance score of 10 and "I should have stayed home" performance.

You know what I wanna do?

I want to make a car that runs on steam, kind of like the Stanley Steamer. I've built a couple of steam engines for other things, and I think they'd be great in cars.

Mercedes don't seem to hold their value, it seems.  I think it makes them great for the used market.  My 300 E is 21 years old, bought it 15 years ago.  Originally went for 45k,, got it for 13 with 56K miles.  Now have 180K, still runs and looks great.  Love the straight six, a very maintainable platform.  Heating system is difficult, but no probs so far, knock on wood.

Never owned one, HOWEVER, I do service two Chevy dealerships where I live, as well as two Ford dealerships. Their Service Directors think my shit don't stink for some reason, and I treat them as such.

Some of these techs live relatively close to me. Shit, one of the Chevy and Ford Service directors do too, now that I think about it!

Some of these guys come to my house and work on my car. For beer! Try to offer them money, but they refuse. Sucks to be me!

The BMW dealership here isn't one of our accounts, but I stroll in there from time to time, talking with the Service manager, so I can get their business! ;)

The more I do, the more I make. The more I make, the more I can spend on the ladies. Know what I'm sayin'?!

Fucking priorities! ;)

Don't get me started and a Dodge dealership I used to do. Fucking (cough, cough,Zangara, cough,LarryHMiller, cough, cough) dealership I used to do.

Fucking crook. ;)

Electricty, yeah, that don't work. Steam, meaning water based powered engines, yes.

It's been done. The thing is, the oil boys killed that idea. Literally and figuratively. It worked, and they can't have that. ;)

You have PM BTW... !

you (or someone you know) could fix your own cars (for the most part).
Back then, GM had 3 lines of cars (Olds Cutlass', Buick Regals and Chev Montecarlo's) that had completely interchangable parts (minor differences).
Those days are so gone!!

Me, I have an '87 Buick Regal GN; dyno'd 580hp.
I can fix/repair anything on that car (other than tranny internals).
Same with my '85 Vette (currently rebuilding; will be 440 rwhp).
Think the hobby's expensive?
Try finding/paying for (well-known) performance parts on a 25+ yo vehicle.
Oh, and my 'good MPG' vehicle is an '04 Chev 3500, dually, crew-cab with Duramax/Allison.
Gets 20 MPG on the highway!

Fast cars/hot women = heaven!! :-D

Prospective: Some of the ladies here aren't as old as my cars!! ;-)

So nice to meet up with people who, like me, have the carbon footprint of Sasquatch.

I can change oil if I wanted, the same with head and tail lights. Even do a tune up. Distributor cap, spark plugs, the works. But I get paid to do certain services, so why can't I pay also?

I'm interested in seeing this Buick Regal of your's!

You'd shit yourself if you saw my buddy's collection of muscle cars before he had to jet them cuz of this economy shit!

Talking GTO Judge, Challenger, Chevelle's, Firebirds, Camaros, Mustang(the one James Bond drove in 'Diamonds are Forever'), Vipers. All stock and bad-ass. Neighbors gave me shit when he came to pick me up to go drinking cuz of the scene he made! lmao!!!

Matter of fact, have some pix. Let's see if my retarded ass can download them from my phone for your viewing pleasure!

Took the Chevelle there, and one of his Challengers(gullwing) was in the show at a local casino car show.

Took FOREVER to get him away from people wanting to talk about his fucking rides so I could get a fucking drink! ;)

and have yet to be 'taken' by anything I've come up against (street).
Although haven't raced a new ZRI Vette yet (635 hp).
And my bud (who helped me with it; a serious GN guy) has one that'll eat mine for breakfast (maybe 700 rwhp).
Last time at the track (test/tune), they told me, "don't come back til this list is completed"!
"Take it I was a little better than 11.49"?, I asked.
Guy turns/grins, looks at me with that 'FY' look; they were pissed!

This is a 238ci (0.30 over), V6 w/ a somewhat GIANT turbo!!

I like my 366 Big Bore, dyno'd at 675 hp on a very conservative dyno, which also provides 550 ft/lbs all the way from 5 grand to 8500.  Car weighs only 2900 lbs.  Do the math.

I have heard the same thing about Land Rover(I thought they would get better after the company was sold guess not) and Jaguars too temperamental.
My favorites are:Infiniti(especially the G37 coupe I love this car!)Toyota's but not all Toyota's even though ypu can drive those forever along with a honda.I have a girlfriend she drives a '94 Honda Accord and will not trade that car for anything.I am also like Mercedes but the older mercedes like the '77 convertible with the 2 tops  I had with the wooden steering wheel a great car.
Also I like Dodge preferrably the Charger and Challenger
The bad:VOLKSWAGON I cannot stand them I owned 2 of them both brand new both a pain in the ass there was always a light popping up on the dash and no one will touch it but the dealership and always in the thousands of dollars to be repaired.
Pontiac(can't say I am sorry to see them go)
And I agree with Kia can I hop on your back MP67?

But now that you bring it up, I service a VW dealership as well. They actually have 2 shifts, meaning, there's a crew that comes in the morning till 5, and one that comes in around 2 till 9 or so that night.

Makes you think...!

The funny part about these situations is, the Ford and Chevy dealerships I go to, there are a lot of techs standing around doing nothing.

So does that mean, that the U.S. builds better cars? Or do the people that own foreign cars need or feel they need more maintainence?

I can go into this further, if you like....! ;)

The old joke about Fords, but I'd rather have a Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer than anything else on the road. Why? Because if there's a problem (other than a tranny), I can fix it! In other words, We Don't Need No Stinkin' Tech!

Not in the Auto industry (does illegal street racing count?) but sometimes I think I should have been. I love cars.

I concur about Jaguar; total fucking piece of shit. Never again.

Have had a Camry forever, the perpetual winter beater back up plan car. I don't like it that much, it's a 4cyl econo box, but it takes the cake for reliability. All those cold mornings the Jaguar wouldn't start - Camry fired right up. It sits for months at a time, fires right up. 200k on the odometer - Camry fires right up.

73k - Jaguar needs a new tranny? Fuck that, SOLD. I spit on the memory of it. I want to buy it back, just so I can set it on fire, push it off a cliff, piss on it, and drop a nuke on it's charred, rusting carcass. I fucking hate that car.

The ol' Camry looks like shit now, it was made before I even had a license. But I've never considered selling it, because whenever I have a problem with whatever other car/cars I own at the time...fires right up.

I'm more into high performance vehicles, particularly American Muscle. I have a lead foot and a love of speed. The foxbody 5.0 ragtop currently serves that need for me. Love it.  That bitch moves.

Regal limited for street racing...er...I mean...getting places quickly... 350 pulled from a Suburban, 3 speed turbo tranny, dual pozis, 750 cfi double pumper, yada yada doesn't run at the moment, I beat on it too much, but next summer, will be leaving skid marks for blocks once again.

77 T-bird all original - fuck sasquatch, this thing has the carbon foot print of Paul Bunyan. Better MPG out of a lumber truck. It's quick for it's size though, and rides like a Caddy. Looks more classy than sporty but I dig it.

G35 right now for more practical purposes. The jury is still out on that one. Had a QX4 for a while, no complaints.

Get to drive the bosses SL6 now and then. Nice ride, wouldn't want to have to fix it though. Look under the hood and it's like I'm staring at a complex algebra equation.

but it rides and drives like brand new, and it's needed no major repairs yet (knock on wood)

They don't make the Park Ave anymore so I don't know what my next car will be.

I just hope this one rides forever.

Why is it I get the feeling all you guys drive really high-mileage cars because you're spending all your money on pussy?  I'm glad my vehicles (Dodge excepted) are low-miles, so I can devote needed resources to The Sport We Love.

Actually, I'm a bit like Columbo, I get very attached to a car and if it behaves itself and takes good care of me, I'll take good care of it.

I usually keep a car about 7-8 years and go 150-175,000 miles.

I've been driving the same class of car since 1991 and GM isn't making them like that any more.

I don't know if I'll go for a LaCrosse or maybe check out something smaller.

I'd like to see if I can take this one up to 200,000 and beyond.

Besides, my mom likes the car.  She is in a wheelchair and likes the nice wide door that makes it easy for her to get in and out.

and I've always done my homework before buying a car. Well, except for that one time with the Mazda RX3.

Outstanding rides-
1966 Volvo PV544. Man, Volvos from this era were great cars. Incredibly easy to work on and very well made.

1986 Nissan Frontier SE5 V6. Sold it with about 250000 miles on it 8 years ago and it ran great for another 5-6 years after that for the guy.

1999 Toyota Camry 4 cyl- still running great with 250,000 on it. 35 MPG on the HWY

1998 Toyota Tacoma 4 cyl- almost 300,000 on it and aside from a little roughness at idle it runs like new. It looks like shit and smells like dogs but it made a trip to Cali and back a few months ago with no trouble at all and got 28 MPG on the trip.

1992 Infiniti G20- Didn't have it long enough to tell whether it was a great car or not but my daughter was driving it when she hit the median barrier on the interstate at about 80 mph and was then rearended by a van. There was nothing left unmangled on the car except the cockpit. When I saw the car, I almost puked because it looked like no one could have come out of that alive but all she had was a few bruises. People who think older cars are safer because they are heavier and don;t crumple are woefully misinformed.

POS rides-

The aforementioned 1976 RX3. It was fun to drive and quick but those early rotaries were terrible as far as longevity. The seats sucked, too.

Every Ford product I ever had. My FIL worked for Ford so we got some sweet deals through the 80s and early 90s on real POS vehicles. Stats show they are much better now but I'll stick with Japanese for the foreseeable future.

Every MG/Austin product I ever owned- 4 total. Man, owning these things was like going to auto tech school. The positive ground added another dimension of interest if you wanted to add some cool updates like an 8 Track player.

I haven't bought a set of tires in over twenty years. I'd rather just change cars. lol

I hate to admit, I pay no attention to gas mileage either, but you can chalk that up to my profession as an oil producer. lmao

Personally I have driven Cadillacs for the last couple of decades, my toy right now is an XLRV, but with the advent of "Government Motors" I think I am due for a change. Maybe it's time for an Italian car? I am also intrigued by the Porsche "Panamera", it's a four door with great lines to it.

There are easier ways to drive yourself insane.

Everyone I've known with a FIAT regretted the experience.

Try a Ferrari instead.

I had thought about buying a spyder the last time I was shopping for a new car about two years ago, but they quit making them in 2006. The new Grancabrio looks intriguing, and a price in the low to mid 100K range as opposed to the three hundred thousand or more is a bit more in line with my budget.

I have to confess, the thought of buying a Fiat has never entered my mind.

Well, now that FIAT owns part of Chrysler you'll see a lot of Chrysler-badged cars with FIAT guts.  The worst of both worlds?  Actually, the new Jeep has a lot of Mercedes parts because it was designed while Merc owned Chrysler.  World of difference, though.

I wonder how Chrysler will be now they merged with Fiat.Hmm.. we will have to see and that is true had a family friend that had a Fiat she loved it but a really headache. She was going to try to have it shipped to Vegas from California her mechanic just advised her to get a new car that it would not hold up in this hot Vegas summer heat.Ferrari now we're talking!LOl!

Ga, keep in mind that the Guv is selling off its stake in GM now that the IPO has been done.  And it's making a profit.  Seems to me the bailout really helped them and they're back to making some great cars, Caddys included.  As for the Panamera, I'm not a fan, and I especially dislike the Cayenne.  I know I'm prejudiced but Porsche is a sports car company and I think it cheapens the brand to be making SUVs.  Can you imagine Ferrari or Maserati making one?  I have read some very good reviews of the Panamera, but I'm not crazy about its looks.

GaGambler126 reads

but I wouldn't dream of buying the stripped down 300HP six cylinder model that sells for about $80k, for the $150K or so that the turbocharged 500HP model sells for, I could easily buy a Maserati instead.

I am completely with you in re to the Cayenne. Only the yuppiest of the yuppies would buy an SUV made by Porsche, The only thing "porsche-like" about the Cayenne is the hood ornament. lol

Maserati Quattroporte is a nice old man car and in red (roughly the same as my BMW) it looks quite stately.  A bargain in the buck-twenty five range.  Let's face it, we're old dudes, in spite of having the maturity of a ten year old.

GaGambler86 reads

I have never been anywhere near that mature. lol

The Quaattroporte does remind me of a seven series BMW, the GranCabrio OTOH is a sharp looking car that isn't outrageously priced, not cheap, but not out of reach either.

and I might be old, but I certainly make up for it in immaturity.

I bought a brand new Range Rover about 14 years ago.   It was great driving for the first 50K.  Between 50K and 100K just about everything that can go wrong with a vehicle did.  Thank God I had an extended warranty.  It was once in the shop for 2 months.  I'll never buy another one.   Rich folks buy them becuase they trade in their cars before they ever reach the 50K point, so they never have to deal with the fall out.  I, however, keep my cars as long as possible.  Hence, I experienced all that is the failure of Range Rover.   At least it did not spontaneously combust.  Some have.

I used to sell them years ago. We always joked that it was the only car that came standard with a flatbed!

You are lucky Range Rovers often don't even make it that long before they sometimes get issues. I hate Rang Rovers.

got $4500 under "cash for clunkers" when the blue-book value was $1500-1800.  This SUV had over 100,000 miles and minimal maintenance in over 12 years of ownership.  Note:  I'm not an Obama fan but I benefited from the program.

The only Expedition I ever owned (or will own) had it's ball joints disintegrate after only about 50K miles.  I took a real hosing on that one.

My wife recently surprised me with some info on purchasing a 'Shelby'. Life is good. Bring on the police chases. LOL

I never pass up a chance to bitch about my Audi A4 Quattro 2002.  I feel for all you VW, Audi, and Porsche people, cause they are all part of the same crappy car company somehow, kinda like Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infinity.  In any case most of my family had a Honda, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, and all were fine with them.  But my dumb ass wanted something different, so I got an Audi.  There slogan "Lead not Follow"---lead me to the poor house constantly fixing that POS, and i had to take it to the dealership 99% of the time cause I was traveling around the US and didn't know any trustworthy mechanics, or ones that even wanted to touch it.

Some of the places i worked at, people didn't even know what kind of a car it is.  Even got pulled over by a cop one time because of a bad tail light and he even was wondering what kind of a car it was.  He even asked and called it "the Olympic car" because of the overlapping four ring symbol on the grill and trunk. LMAO....

I even called the customer support and bitched at the person on the other end of the line saying "You've pissed off the wrong demographic.  I'm a thirty year old who will be buying cars for the next thirty years, and most of my friends are thirty year olds coming into some money, who will also be buying cars for the next thirty plus years, and none of them will be buying Audi's.  Not only that, but by me traveling around the country I've told people on both coasts and the 20 or so states i've been to in between the Atlantic and Pacific not to buy Audi's"

Now I'm telling anybody that want to read this and believe my testamony "Don't buy and Audi.  I actually think it means crap in German!!!!!."  LOL

Okat I feel better now.

I've had both good and bad experiences with Audi, but the bad one was waay back in 1974 when I had the bad fortune to own a 100LS, one of the first with an anti-smog device that recirculated exhaust gas back to the engine.  The fucking car would actually stall while going around corners.  I dumped it.
Flash forward to today.  My S5 is now almost three years old (it was one of the first in the country) and I'm still in total love with it.  It's a rocket in a straight line but it's the cornering I love.  The quattro just glues it to the road.  The clutch and tranny are so slick and sweet it's a pleasure just to tool around town in.  And it still gets stares in gas stations and at traffic lights.  Even better, it's been stone reliable, the service is free and I get a nice, new A4 loaner free whenever it needs service.  I only wish I could afford one of the new RS5s when they arrive next year to I could go stomp on M3s.

to a woman's clit for size. I like the RS5, but at least compare it to an M5 or E55 AMG, or something else comparable.

You must really drive a Fiat...

WTF?  You make no sense.  The RS5 and M3 are both 2-door V8s with more than 400 hp.  What else is there to compare?  The M5 (I've owned one, the 1991 model) and the E55 (I've owned one, the 2005 model) are both 4 doors and can be compared to each other, but not to smaller, lighter coupes.  Listen, dude, I've had a national license from the SCCA for more than 15 years and race a car that puts all the above in the shade -- a GT-1 Riley/Scott Camaro that Scott Pruitt won the TransAm championship with in 1994.  I'm not Scott Pruitt but have raced with the late Paul Newman in Gt-1 and F355 Challenge Ferraris.  I don't give a rat's ass if you believe me or not, but don't run your weak-assed shit by me and not expect to get some backlash.  You have no clue, so STFU.

PS:  Do you even know what an RS5 is?  They won't even be in the country until mid 2011.

Replying here because I felt I flamed on you a bit too much in the posts below, so please ignore it.  The idea of me in a Fiat was like calling me a Commie.  But I still think you're wrong re rejecting the comparison of the two cars.  Just went to several reviews that did exactly that.  Interestingly, both cars have identical power-to-weight ratios or 8.4 lbs./h.p.  The Audi has more ponies but also weighs more with its quattro drive system.  Head to head it's hard to say who wins.  Depends on the drivers, the track and the conditions.  In the wet, the Audi walks away.
PS: re the Newman ref below, yes, I really did race with him and miss him a lot.  And I'll admit that, even when he was 80, he beat me more than I beat him.  Lots more.
