I like to bring my own blanket and pillow. I bet withthe economy like this, they will cut corners on hygiene even more! A tent...that can be gun, oops meant fun but bring a gun anyway! lol
Now wonder why I just drink bottled water, my own that I buy elsewhere, while staying in a hotel. I also bring my own pillows and take off their comforters.
I like to stay at a suites hotel when I can. They even have pent houses!! With full kitchens, two bedrooms, and extras.
I know that most upscale hotels have clean glasses they switch out. This is one more reason to bring your own soap. An anti-bacterial pump works for clean-ups and hand washing.
not much to say... but sad fact is, that is the least of the poor hygeine that is practiced in hotels... which is why when I travel I always try to stay in a tent! lol!!!

at airport, hotels, etc of 10 people using public restrooms I noticed only 5-6 washes their hands of those 3-4 use only water(which does not eliminate germs from your hands)...
I never sit on the bespreads at any hotel. I also lift the covers and check the mattresses for bed bugs. I used to work for a Luxury Resort and we even had bed bugs there! I know what to look for and now everytime I stay in a hotel, I check for them. As for the bedspreads, I also know these are not cleaned often. Even at the "Luxury Resort" we only cleaned them every 3 months! Yikes! The sheets are supposed to be clean. If there are no obvious fold marks, they were not changed prior to your arrival. I have called the front desk to get fresh ones and changed them out myself.
When you enter a room set your luggage by the door. Check the bed for cleanliness and CHECK the MATTRESSES along the seams for brown stains and small bugs. Then flip the covers open with the sheet on top. Only then am I setting anything (including my ass) down on the bed.
This may sound nuts, but Bed Bugs are back! Especially along the East Coast. If you take them home with you, you WILL have a VERY difficult time getting rid of them. We had to close down an entire building with 20 units in it to get rid of these tiny critters. We had specialists come in and "tent" the entire building for extermination. All mattresses and linens had to be disposed of. They disposed of everything to contain this problem including the towels and curtains!
I agree with you to an extent. I am by no means a germaphob! lol However, before my head rests on that hotel room pillow, I am checking it out.
All the other things you mention are not quite as intimate as sleeping between the sheets in a hotel room bed that may not be clean or worse yet have bed bugs!
So, as absurd as it may sound to you, it's better to be safe than sorry.
