I know to clear cookies, temp files & etc...  but have you noticed...  that when you log out & back in without clearing...  that your member name is still in the box.  Without a password, the reviews (non-VIP) are visible.  If you have a review with that user name (of course) good luck denying to the SO.
I haven't been bagged, don't plan on it...  just ya'll be careful out there!

For IE
Go to tools
content
then personal information
then auto complete settings -

And the rest is self explanatory.

A wonderful program called Window Washer is worthwhile for all.  There are more traps than just cookies.  Windows logs all your actions and you never see that but a suspicious wife along with a savvy lawyer can haul your computer off and have a field day.

Error logging, cookies, tracks on your hard drive left behind by deleted files all are washed and written over by Window Washer, and it can be set to run everytime you close your browser.

Why not set your browser to automatically delete all personal data (cookies, cache, history, autofill, passwords, etc) every time you close a window?  You may have to hunt a little for the settings or ask someone knowledgable...or even switch to a better brower...but it is so very worth it.

Yes, I'm using IE.  "Everytime I run Virus Scan, it wants to clear cookies."

I've tried Firefox, but some of the sites I have to log onto, for my business, will only take IE. Darn! I think I could perhaps use both, but me and my computer (oops, my computer and I) get a bit confused. Any suggestions?

I've read about "Window Washer" & I know I should get it.  I can't seem to find where to get it now.  Does it run quietly in the background with out some stupid logo (like one I had on my very old computer, that about announced I was doing something I didn't want to be seen.  I think it was called Evidence Eliminator".)

thanks,

Other than a Microsoft site awhile back.. I have never been to a site that wouldnt load in Firefox. Some might not be designed to work "properly" with firefox.. like maybe not allow cut and paste or something..

but I havent seen a site for personal use or my business  that I couldnt access with Firefox.

I've had 2 that specifically said that I could only login using IE. They are relatively specialized sites, and will hopefully get up to speed soon.

No reason you can't run multiple browsers. Download Firefox, but leave IE as the "Default Browser" (your browser will ask you if you want to make it the default. That way, you can run IE for work and Firefox for fun. Still, bad idea to use your company network for fun. They can monitor all your activity no mater what browser you use.

No problem regarding company network since I'm in business for myself. Is there a conflict between the security software between browers?

Thanks for the tip...  it looks a bit different in my XP home edition.  I'll miss autocomplete but way better to be safe.  I'm going to add window washer ASAP.

The internet cache is an antiquated concept.  It was created in the days of dial-up so that frequently visited pages would load faster. Now in the days of broadband, it's pointless.  Web pages load faster. Plus the sites themselves update many times daily, so you end up refreshing and reloading the page anyway.  Clearing the cache makes sure you get the most recent page whenever you go there.

Clearing the cookies is just a good idea in general.  Ever gone to one site, and there's an ad for a store you were visiting yesterday?  Then you go to another page, another ad for the same store?  That's a tracking cookie.  Even if you don't mind such tactics, you know there are sites out there who will use such tactics in a more nefarious manner.

Browsing history?  That's one that's harder to legitimize.  But an overall strategy of keeping your system free of virii and malicious code should include eliminating browser history.

So I have Firefox just clear it all whenever I close the browser.

Ciara, here is a legitimate reason to clear files: All those cookies and Temporary Internet files take up loads of space, provide clues to all sorts of intruders and data collectors about your online activities - INCLUDING - potentially sensitive financial information.   Webroot's Window washer gets rid of all that evidence and even bleaches it by writing over deleted file sectors.  You know that when you delete stuff it really doesn't get deleted it just becomes available to be overwritten.

I got busted by my SO and it caused HUGE problems.  She installed some program that won't evel let me go to Auto Trader for Pete's sake.  Got around it by rehabbing an old laptop so, when she is gone - total freedom....
