they sound like some people I deal with daily that are part and parcel to the vicious cycle that is child abuse.

Of all the people I know, the ones that were spanked as kids grew up to be responsible and hard workers. The ones that weren't spanked are flighty/flakey and unreliable.

A proper spanking is deserved and needed at times. I hate these idiots that say don't spank your child, talk to them. I don't believe in beating a child but I do believe in proper discipline! You sound like one those that use the excuse "oh they're just children" and proceed to let them do what they want because of that. I've seen it way too many times. Parents in stores letting their kids run around and creating havoc and if someone says anything the parents get offended. Kids need discipline and sometimes talking does NOT work and a quick spank does.

In my world, there is a HUGE difference between child abuse and spanking/discipline.

Child abuse is meted out via fist, fly swatter, Hot Wheel track, electrical cord and booted foot, with the occasional pool stick thrown in for good measure.

Child abuse is usually accompanied by a litany of how useless, or fat or stupid or ugly the child is.  Possibly a reminder of how the child ruined the parents' life.

Discipline consists of several well place swats to the ass, a smart crack to the tops of the hands when sweetie insists on touching something that doesn't belong to them or the very occasional reminder across the lip when said lip gets too big.

Discipline is closely followed by a hug and a kiss and a reminder of just how much the child is loved even when their behavior is less than stellar.

That kid deserved a good spanking.  but it WAS a funny commercial.

I see the humor but this is way too close to home.

Inlaws had young teen child call 911 & hang up...  had a couple of burly cops show up & asked him to go down town.  Kid didn't like being sent to her room...  very nice room I might add.  It was several hours getting sorted oout.

My step-daughter did not like some denial & stated she would call the Police & tell a made up story.  (The little darling (~9) resented the marriage & tried to break us up for years.)  I handed her the phone but suggested, that she go in her room & take one last look around...   Because lawyers are not free, the house (my house) would be sold & no telling where they would live.  No, they wouldn't get to just keep the house.
Her Mom thought maybe they could get an appartment down city (new school, away from activities & friends).  That was the last we heard of that bright idea!  (If not handled at home, she could have gone to school & pulled the same half baked idea.  I think the school circulum had a segment about "rights" etc just prior.)
I was not SD's biological father, but I had responsibilities.  Often I made spot judgements...  and my say so went for the time being.  I let Mom be the appeals court.  I got to explain why I made a decision, Mom could reverse me but as time went on, it happened less & less.  Nearly 20 years has transpired.  I hope dear SD does not have these troubles with her own children.

traveling through a fairly deserted mountainous region, my mother and sister in the front seats were discussing how low the gas was and speculating whether or not we'd make it to the next gas station before we ran out.

Sitting in the back with my crayons and paper, my 8 year old self thought I'd be helpful and made a sign for the car coming up behind us that read "do not pass, may need gas".

The car didn't pass and when we safely reached the gas station, it's occupants quickly approached our car to check if I was okay, literally brushing my mother aside to reach me. Turns out they couldn't actually read the sign, only that a little kid was trying to signal some sort of distress from the back window.

My poor mother... once she got over the awkwardness of the situation she did applaud my ingenuity, but requested I check with her first in future

spaking me when I acted out of sorts. It made me a better person, instilled discipline in me, and I love them for it.

Oh yeah...

My little one called 911 by accident (18 months) and LE showed up to check.

A friend had his little one tell her teachers that aunty lets her smoke (not true).  THAT was a fun one!

Why I would sit her down and make her watch Glee over and over.  That would fix her.

Reminds me of the time when I was about 10 or 11 at a mall with my Mom. She left for a minute and came back, and as she was walking toward me I screamed at the top of my lungs "No I don't want any candy and no I won't take a ride with you!!!!!" Just for fun. People started staring, salesclerks were looking at us.....and she just burst out laughing. It was funny
