What's the connection between Cops and Doughnut shops?

I joke about cops and doughnut shops as much as everyone else, but what is the origin of this "Urban Legend"?

I mean, think about it when was the last time you saw a cop car, or a Motorcycle cop parked in front of a doughnut shop?

During my salad days I worked for a major car and truck rental company  here in  LA.  Throughout my career, I spent an awful lot of time behind the wheel for one reason or another, and at all different times of the day or night. I worked in that industry for 18 years. During that time, I saw cops parked in front of all different types of resturants. I only saw a cop parked in front of a doughnut shop once, maybe twice.

In this age of privacy, and political correctness perhaps we need to change this incorrect assertion.

At one time McDonalds was giving free food to all cops on duty. I also see cops parked in front of Mexican fresh grills and other "healthy" types of resturants, never in front of a doughnut shop. As I said perhaps we need to update the legend.

What do you think? Have you ever seen a Cop parked in front of a doughnut shop?

Happy Holidays to everyone, as well as an awesome 2004!

".. the stories about cops and donuts comes from the fact that police officers work odd hours when most restaurants and stores are closed. In past years, the donut shops were all that were open at night. When an officer wanted to stop for a break, coffee and donuts were convenient.  Since we are available for calls at all times, we may have to run off in a moment's notice. If you have several squads working an area and only one place is open, you are bound to see several officers there throughout the night. The donut shops are almost all gone now."

Cops on late night duties also used to have trouble finding places with open public bathrooms. I remember as a kid, that my parents owned a gas station. They always left the outside lights on and the bathroom unlocked so the cops could use the restroom and sit and have light to fill out their reports while sitting in their cars. Cheap security.

Fast food restaurants are the common place to find cops now. Easy access for parking, near freeways and major intersections. Owners are glad to see them and they do no harm when they stay at a table for an extended period of time. Clean bathrooms and well lit areas are also bonuses. There are a number of them open 24 hours.

A Chicago Radio DJ(Kev) used to do a bit called "Cop/No Cop" A caller would guess if there would be a Cop at a donut shop or not. The DJ would call a donut shop at random and ask the worker if a cop was there. Surprising how many times there WAS a cop munching a few donut holes.

This was a very interesting but, funny thread!!! ROFLMAO!!!

There is a very small town called Kenneth City right outside of St.Petersburg here. The township itself is a half mile wide and about a half mile long.It being so small, and the town residents mostly being old and always looking to complain about something, actually bared thier police officers from going to the local dunkin donuts on shift.
