Seriously, do you know what it takes to get tenure at a competitive research university? It's absolutely brutal, and modern tenure does NOT make you set for life in some fields like in the old days. Depending upon field, tenure is frequently only as good as long as the grants keep pouring in (meaning constant long hours). For the work involved, the salary doesn't go up all that much, either, unless you end up as an endowed chair or you're superlatively successful in your field (which requires some luck as well as brains -- keep in mind the competition isn't Everyday Joe).
