One of the most egregious mistakes made in the Vietnam War was to make the war about the soldier. Disagreeing with the war shouldn't equate to blaming the soldiers who are sent to fight that war.

I have many issues with the Iraq war, but it certainly isn't the fault of the soldier on the ground. I hold our soldiers in the highest of respect. They voluntarily chose to take on a job that doesn't pay a fraction of what it is worth, that takes them far away from their family and friends, places them in harm's way, and asks them to what ordinary citizens can't or won't do.

Yes, I know who Smedley Butler is. He is the most decorated soldier in the history of the Marines. He was a great man, and a great soldier. I respect him for the service he devoted to his country, and I respect him for his efforts to promote peace after leaving the service. Both are the actions of a laudable man.

In this war, and in any war that our country fights, I will support our soldiers wholeheartedly, regardless of whether I agree with the war or not. If you have a problem with the Iraq War, I humbly suggest you take it up with the politicians that chose to send our soldiers to war, not the soldiers themselves.

That's just my two cents. Take it for what it is worth.

As a parent of a daughter who went to Iraq,
Thank you.
My daughter had a similar experience when she came back.
It made her cry, and she asked if that was how it was when I came back from Nam, I said no.

Just my opinion...

While in high school I had classmates with Fathers who were POW's or MIA's. My graduating class was around 105 seniors.

I know there are tons of ways to support our troops..even when we LOSE at war. What I really wanted to ask him was how was the moral of the troops. He said it was good. And I was thankful.
I really was loooking forward to spending Memorial Day in Washington Dc.

But instead I had lunch with a Soldier.

trashed for no reason other than they wore the uniform.  I saw buildings burned to the ground because some leftest "thought" they were ROTC buildings... (they were not and ironically they happened to  have housed the psychology department)...  but most of all, I saw disrespect for those who would give their lives for this country... and defend to their death the right to disrespect them.

we, in this country, do a terribly bad job of teaching respect.  Sorry, that is my opinion.

To all who served - and to those with whom I served, and to all who still serve, Monday, Memorial Day, is your day and I salute you!  and I thank you.

Just wanted to thank you all for your service.  I travel a lot and when I see a soldier at the airport I try to buy their drinks when I have a chance.

Thankfully, for the most part, our nation has progressed past the point where we blame our men and women in uniform for things they cannot control.

I was born in a era between conflicts but was fortunate enough to be in a situation where I could volunteer at at local VA when I was young.  Seeing these heroes from WW1,WW2, Korea and Vietnam helped guide me in my career decisions and make me who I am today.

Thank you to those who have served our country!

I often fly back and forth to Fayettville, NC because I have a sister in the army there, and lots of family in the area. Everytime I fly into Fayettville, there are inevitably soldiers on the flight. Whenever I see a soldier on my flight, I always pay for a few beers and ask the stewardess to give them to the guys. Most flights I have been on, I haven't been the only one to buy a drink for one of the soldiers on the flight. Its wonderful to see the way people go out of their way to say a simple thank you, or show appreciation to the men in uniform who protect us. But as often as the kindness of strangers is extended to our soldiers, there is always room for more.

I also served at Fort Bragg.

I will be thinking of your sissy this Memorial Day and praying for our troops, no matter what soil their feet touch.

Hugs,
ciara

So I guess no one here knows about or has heard of Smedley Butler (for sure you Marines our there know). Rather than tell the whole story, those of you posting these messages -- if you're interested in expanding your knowledge -- should do a little internet research on who Smedley Butler was, and what he came to realize. I'm all for heartfelt feelings, but just to remind, "ignorance is a dangerous thing."

I know I support the troops.

I don't like this war..but I didn't like Vietnam either...nor the Civil War. I really don't like any war...

BUT

I'm all for supporting OUR TROOPS NOW..later and always.

Ignorance is something I have very little of.
I might not have any..I mean I turn 51 this week. I've been around the world...and the block a FEW times.

in Afghanistan. To be honest with you guys, supporting the troops is great and as a father and an uncle, i can't thank you enough for your support. But, if you ask me, i tell ya that the boys have done ENOUGH. There is nothing they can do now that would change the situation. if we haven't changed it in the last 4 years, what is the likelihood that we are going to change in the next one or two upcoming years?  As a father and an uncle of two boys who are in their 2nd tour, i say bring them home. That's how you can support that troops the most. That's my opinion. It might be biased, but it is biased because of the love i have for those boys.

and I want to suggest to Bush, in keeping with his State Of the Union address...to uniform our "Civil Army"

Take the killers, rapists and child molesters from our MAx'd prisons..PUN inteaded...and send them over to keep the peace.

Bring our Honorable Americans home

Have you ever served in the military? Just curious. There are a lot of things I didn't like when I served but I was still proud to serve. It also made me appreciate my country more, as well as learning its misgivings. If nothing else, the military teaches young men and women discipline, how to take direction and work as a group, and definitely how to work under stress (the worst kind).

So . . . either you had a bad experience in the military (which I'm sorry to hear), you lost someone very close to you in the service, or you're just too young to know the difference between ignorance and tolerance. But opinions are always welcome, because that's why I fought for my country to have the freedom to speak against and for things.

Hugs,

and those who cowardly snipe, have never served.  Sorry, just my observation.... and you used an alias to post.

How about Bush he never served he trained as a pilot for what amounts to as a biplane, Cheney had better things to do,and that guy  who ran defense didn't go  either , how many relatives do the people in congress hve in the military?  probably None in Iraq. send your kids but not mine Sooooooooo then try to crap all over Kerry because Bushes guys said he didn't deserve the medal, so he was a BAD guy because he went to Nam when he didn't have to. i'm a veteran and i have a more realistic outlook than all you draft dodgers  who don't send their kids to play dodge ball with real bullets

he went to 'Nam.  He was bashed cause he craped on those with whom he served.  it was clear he served, cause it would look good on the resume, not because he believed in anything.

Second, I've no problem with saying that Bush and cheney are "make-believe" soldiers... cause know what? they are.

Get straight why folks bash folks... you'll come off better.

is EXACTLY what MANY of our uniformed men and women are feeling NOW. Not to mention most of the Bush Administration, the nation and the world. This WAR serves absolutely no one YET!
And it is my humble opinion it NEVER will.

Some might make $$ from it...BUT

many will be disabled for life...dead, depressed, divorced, disgusted....
DETACHED.

We will all suffer and that is as it should be.

WAR is SUFFERING

We had a chance in 2003 and blew it.  Why?  because  the Dems failed to put up a rational, logical, in-touch with the common man (and woman) candidate.  One who does not bash his comrads at arms.  One who stands on his principals rather than polls.  One who has a history of leadership.  Kerry?  not the right guy.

War is suffering - I will grant you that.  But will you grant me that we are at war.  Not a war of our making and have been at that war since 1979!  Radical Islamic Muslims seek to destroy Western culture (and viewing the latest Lindsey Lohan, Brittney Spears, or Paris Hilton romp, cannot says I blame them).  So for them, a Starbucks on every corner, and Mickey D's dictating diet... well, it is not their cup o tea....

But before you jump too much to their defense, review what they would do to those who participate in this hobby !  We would all be dead.  Seriously, the problem I have with Bush is that he is too unimaginative to fight this war.  AS I have said too many times... We are fighting a war with You're-a-peeing tactics... and the enemy is winning... we need new tactics...

Suffer?  The what if scenarios are really all about suffering... An A-bomb carried into Manhattan....  Release of nerve gas in the WDC subway system....  Biological weapon released at O'Hare... ALL possible.... and all something those who hate us would love to do.... and our dolt of a pres cannot seem to get the immigration issue right.

Good idea!

Send away the people that keep our landcapes beautiful and keephouse! (Housekeeping)
It's bad enough we won't be harvesting much fruit this year..and now we won't have the pickers!

I like attention  paid to the Homeland..including security, healthcare and education..not to mention Gun Control.
My idea is this
Make min wage 9 hr and have a free healthcare program...prob would end most PETTY crime and relieve the burden of welfare system...so much to do...and everyone should walk...do away with obesity....and sex twice a day..a good way to start the day..and a good finish..and all females/wifes/g/f's should LOVE to suck sock and have their pussy eaten...
And the world would be a happy place.
The End

Thanks for giving me a good laugh. However, you're right about everything. There are no easy answers to our economic problems, our war situation or crime. How about these for a start:

1)Make min wage 10/hr with free healthcare.

2)Take everyone off of welfare (except sick people) and give them free daycare so it is feasible for them to work.

3)Stop buying oil from the Middle East for a year, so we'll all have to walk. Americans are definitely overweight. Or, better yet, everyone should drive a Hybrid vehicle or a scooter (like they do in parts of Europe), so our gas is cheaper and we don't have as many accidents or have to live with the escalating pollution problem. Gees! I hate trying to look over -- or around -- an SUV just to make a turn. Very dangerous! When did we all have to start driving monstrous vehicles? For large families YES, and yea, I know. People say, "They're safer." Yea, right!  Only for those who have the bigger vehicles.

4)Everyone will have solar panels installed on their homes, smoking will no longer be allowed(unless it's pot in a controled/safe atmosphere:), and quit tearing up our rain forests.

5)Protect our farmers from having to declare bankruptcy; everyone must become a vegetarian; and organic produce should be the norm. Okay! We can eat a steak once or twice a month. Yummy!

6)Allow any child who wants to go to college to attend classes without worrying about the expensive tuition and books.

7)Stop paying athletes more than our teachers and physicians make in a year. If we do, then make the athletes go to school for seven years. :)

8)Children need discipline (not necessarily a branch from a tree), but a parent who is actually in charge. I think our society is starting to overcompensate from repercussions of child abuse and are raising spoiled brats! (Okay, not everyone, but a lot of people).

9)People who love animals and realize they are our children are the only people who are allowed to own animals.

10)Last but not least: People need to be more worried about murders, rapists and terrorists instead of people making love (not war)like us.

The End

I started to reply, but then I realized that you would only come and spank me.... so I've decided to decline to reply and only to say that in general I agree!  on most of your points, well some of your points..., well, there are a couple of good points in there......   um.... well, that part about love and not war... I guess I could go for that one....!  lol!!  and the tree branch....   would that be for ole BSD!????   over your knee.... hee hee... If I can get you riled enough would you promise to come here and spank me!

and as far as protecting animals... that would keep me from spanking the monkey! lol!

Thank you for taking the time to honor a soldier who needed it. I applaud anyone who stands up and says thank you to our men and women in uniform. Having served 5 years active duty and 3 reserve it's more than nice to see the civilian sector heartily supporting our troops. Kudos to you for being such a GEM!
