It is not only the economy but the increased cost of living. Many baby boomers are paying $20,000 - $60,000 a year for their children's college these days.

I also think that, compared to Europe, in the US there is the added factor of LE. For many I imagine that the perspective of losing one's job if caught plays a big role too since sadly there is not much plan B available these days

I believe that it is getting harder for most to afford the hobby or might be preparing in case they loose their jobs. I also believe that although you will see a lot more girls getting into this at a lower price the ones with the best reviews for the buck will prevael.
