Click the link and read the article and see if you feel like I do that people are getting too involved with cyber space.

Is it coming to the point where the cyber world means more than the real world?

Is the term "real world" going to start meaning the cyber world?

What is the appropriate penalty for murder in cyber space?  Would it be to ban the person from it?  Would that be, in essence, a death penalty?

I almost hope I'm not around to see this come to pass.

I also just realized that my whole rant here is on cyber space.  Oh well...

Insane that people have that much time on there hands.. For me if it where not for the fact I’m out on temp disability from my civi  job I wouldn’t be on the board s  but to post adds. How crazy to take a game so seriously?? I’m with you Mr. fisher I don’t want to see the day we all live behind a PC screen.

my kids TM all their buds... they go online and com with other kids through video games and cyberchat.... at work, folks cannot even talk to you because they are texting on the blackberry, iPhone with a blue tooth plugged into their ear... making them look like a borg.... I go to a meeting... and virtually everyone in the meeting pulls out a laptop and taps away... e-mails to folks not even IN the meeting....

and all the while, we tell each other that the other party does not communicate well......

For some time, I have watched the decline of the art of conversation.... real world????   last time I was in the real world was around 1986....     ironic - that.

While this is kind of funny, and definitely strange, it is REALLY sad.  It is an unfortunate occurrence that will probably happen more and more often as real-time contact with live human beings is being given up for virtual contact with made-up characters.  Some people simply lose touch with reality as their on-line characters become more and more real.  While computers and e-mail and message boards can help us stay connected, there is no substitution for real relationships to keep people a little more grounded in reality.

Hmm...on a lighter note, I wonder when a game for virtual hobbyists and providers will come out?  Will this new generation of people who are so into this form of entertainment pay real money for virtual contact?

Anyone up for some good, old-fashioned, up close and personal, contact?

has yet commented on the most obvious (to us anyhow) implication of all this: You can divorce, kill, or get punished for killing on line; how long before you can have sex on line? I'm not talking about porn, but real replacement sex.  No worry about disease; the best ladies able to provide anywhere without the bother of travel; sex without the mess.  Some problems, of course, like donations.  If a great lady can be providing to men all over the country, what can she reasonably charge? Are there any limitations on service? (If so why? For the right price --3 or 4 bucks-- you could do cyber Greek on me, though I can't imagine why you would want to. Just send the money to my post office box and enjoy yourself.)The possibilities are endless.  Gourmet cyber dining, cyber surgery without pain or blood, cyber death (be at your own cyber funeral and cyber watch the cyber tears.) I guess I better stop before I end up being cyber committed.

I think that to those who have an unsatisfactory "real" life, the solace of the Internet can be the hub of what someone considers to be their meaningful existence -- especially with the advent of massive multi-player (MMO) games like Maple Story and World of Warcraft, in which a lot of situations rely on having a lot of 'cyber buddies' to back you up, as it were.

Personally, I never understood.  While I feel that the Internet is a wonderful tool for gaining knowledge and meeting people you may otherwise have no opportunity to meet, when people resort to 'virtual' murder, they may need therapy, at the very least, and perhaps rehabilitation from the Internet. :D

I think we still have years to go before "cybersex" approaches anything remotely close to reality.

Hell, they still don't have a decent "analog" sex toy for men (imho).  Anyone try Fleshlight?  It's feels good, but it doesn't feel anything like the real thing, imho.

They've got a LONNNNGGGG way to go.

Why do you thing we have much more health problems than our parents? They used to actually walk to the bank, grocery market and mall! If it was a friend's birthday they had to go buy her flowers and gifts at the store and deliver it to her themselves, but what do we do now? E-Card!!!

I find myself sitting in front of my computer 16 hours a day. I am losing my sight, have extreme back pain and got carpal tunnel syndrome!

I am addicted to internet, one day when My ISP Company had problems and I had no connection to the internet I was walking around the house like an addict who is going through withdrawals. I finally went to the back yard, sat by the wall and hi-jacked neighbor's Wi-Fi!!!!

What happened to those gold days when there was no technology? life was much happier and healthier... Just my 2 cents.

In the second paragraph I mentioned a virtual game for hobbyists and providers.  But thanks for elaborating on my very abbreviated thought.

...on face to face interaction, exploring and utilizing the world around you and incorporating its landscapes into your storyline, etc.  My boyfriend is an avid D&D player, as are most of my friends, and I am pretty sure they wouldn't lose it and "kill" someone if they wanted to change the game or leave it altogether.  Anyway, the game model I'm used to involves monsters constantly trying to kill you no matter what!

D&D was initially published in 1974 -- so I'm pretty sure that if "D&D life" were significantly corroding the quality of "real life" for its players, we'd know by now. :)

Sorry, I'm not trying to lecture or nitpick -- I just gotta defend all my D&D nerdfriends. :)

Thanks for defending us D&D nerds, been playing 25 years and enjoy it. Getting together with friends and playing games, some play pictionary, some play monopoly, and some play D&D. The social aspect is what matters, the game is just the reason to get together.
