Last night I was dining apres session with a long time fav and I used the term "hobby" to refer to our common enterprise.   She scrunched up her face at my use of the term, as many often do as "hobby" seems a bit vacuous and not really descriptive of the importance to which we all attach to this.

I told her how people have, on this very board, decried the use of the term "hobby", but so far there has been no real replacement for how to describe this "good life".    Then it struck me, how about "good life"?

It has a certain elegance and describes the feeling I get from my participation to a Tee.

Any takers?

Any non-takers?

Put it in the 'maybe pile"?

and would prefer ANY alternative. I've referred to it as a game. But I don't really care. A hobby is something life stamp or coin collecting. Calling someone a "hobbyist" is ludicrous. I'm a whoremonger.

Simplifying it to "the life" or "the lifestyle"?

I know that swingers call their thing, the Lifestyle, but they don't own the word.

I'm one of those that don't get my feathers ruffled re: the name hobby, But mongering and whoremonger sound kind of icky...

It's like if you were a world class wine expert and someone described you as an alcohol drinker. True, but leaving out a lot of interesting stuff.

I'm not sure I like the suggested term that much better though. For me, I think the whole issue comes down to trying to come up with euphemisms because using the direct terms are somehow undesirable. I would say we should just find a term that actually describes what people are actually doing rather than these more indirect terms.

For myself, I don't actually try to make a term up for this any more than I try making up terms for other activities I do. When I think about sessions I tend to think of those involved as being either the one hosting the activity (not really the physical place for often that is the case) so like the term hostess over things like provider or the whole gambit of Ho, whore, sex-worker, relaxation assistant. . . .

Ths truth is, its a hobby. Why not just accept that?

The "good life" is not one where you have a hooker addiction. And that is what we all have that are paying for pussy.

Any term you come up with will eventually take on a negative connotation, simply because under the worst circumstances, hobbying can lead to destruction at many levels (feelings, finances, relationships, freedom, etc.).

That said, for me, 'hobby' is the an accurate term.  I'm spending what disposable time and resources I have on a entirely enjoyable activity.  I can't think of any other recreational pastime that I'd enjoy more.

I rarely discuss "the hobby," per se, with my hostesses in camera (in her chambers). In camera, it's more of a "I had a great time," "Thanks for meeting with me," or "When can I see you again?" Even though it's not my favorite term to use, I do use it ex parte (outside the presence of the other party of the partying part), such as right here at the beginning of this post.
.
There is a famous book about the Boston Combat Zone called "A Kind of Life" by Roswell Angier (who recently passed away, 2023). He doesn't say "good" or "bad," just a kind of life.
http://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/06/17/metro/roswell-angier-whose-combat-zone-photos-captured-part-boston-history-dies-82/
"Roswell Angier, whose Combat Zone photos captured part of Boston history, dies at 82."
I'm trying to remember what he said about how he chose the title of the book and I THINK he said it was an expression used by one of his female subjects.

(Read some of the blurbs and reviews.)
(For those who want to read it and look for comparisons, "A Kind of Life" is available at many public libraries.)
.
But back to "the -----," how about "He that shall not be named." ?

Let’s see … in my spare time I workout, watch certain sports teams and tv shows, see providers, play golf , tennis and surf, read certain types of books and hike!  Most of these activities, including seeing providers are my hobbies!, so I guess I’m a hobbyist! The women I see are “providers” of certain pleasures. I like to keep it simple.

I really love the sweetness of your term, but I'm not positive it would catch on

I think the term "hobby" is just generational slang. To me, it doesn't bring up a ton of negative feelings, but it sounds as corny and outdated as someone exclaiming "groovy!" or "don't have a cow!" 😂

Conversationally, I just refer to it as "my style of dating". I don't think that's helpful in terms of starting a trend, but that's what feels the most natural to me.

I was thinking of a synonym for kittens or cats, more relevant to lopaw's situation and "more configurations" not relevant to many of us (except as voyeurs): P2P.

I don't think it's about the name that bothers them, I think what we do that does. You can call it anything you want and they still will have an aversion to it. Go on twitter and follow some of these providers. They actually hate us. And what's even more surprising, some of them will have the TER stamp on their website and will still put on their twitter feed how they hate TER. I personally don't get why they think it's okay for them to see different men for a living but have a hard time with men seeing different providers on a regular basis.

A term that actually describes what we do would be Fucking 4 money!
That would cover the buyer and the seller.
Straight and to the point!
But I'm pretty sure that would offend the people that want to gentrify the sex trade!
Like not spelling out Fuck, Pussy or Cock on a F*ck Board!
