I would be honest. Thank them for contacting you, let them know you have been thinking of them. But, due to the economy, you have had to cut back on certain expenses. You find yourself having to meet with others that are more within your current "budget".  Also, let them know that you do not/did not expect them to lower their rates, so you didnt' contact them.  End with "hopefull the economy will be turning around soon and I will be able to hobby with  my first choice."   Maybe times are tough for her as well and she rather give you a discount than have you go elsewhere.  Or she will say see you in a few months.  lol

I have a feeling this scenario is going to play out frequently for a lot of us over the next year or so, so don't expect them to be surprised if you come clean. You'll feel like you're letting them down, but they have to understand.

Maybe the market will roar back and save our asses. Sure.

Honesty is the best policy.....

.....especially if you did enjoy your time with them.  Be upfront with your situation, you never know, if you are top notch in their book they may or may not cut you some slack.  They may also be e-mailing you because things may be slow.
Everything is on a case by case basis these days.

I agree with the other posters, honesty is usually the best policy. Just tell them honestly and politely that you need to cut back. I'm sure they will understand.

I have many old friends who have had to tighten their budget and I do understand. After all, I have been a very special part of their lives for awhile now and it goes a lot deeper than an hour of sensual delights.  You do share private intimate tidbits of your lives..

I would be very hurt if my friends did not contact me to say hello..I'm not a high price lady here but yes, even the guys in my price range are having problems. Instead of every week  or every other week visits it is once a month. Depending on the friend, I have been suggesting a meeting for coffee to chat. It's a chance to be human and share some time without putting a price on it. I know some lady is going to jump on my ass for this but yes...Meet my good friends for free and help alleviate a little stress with conversation. After all this too will pass in time and I know who will still be my friend.

I see only good from answering the ladies you have seen on a regular basis to let them know your thinking of them but that things have changed financially for you at the moment. They contacted you and know very well what is going on with the economy.Let them bring up the subject of getting together after you have mentioned the lack of funds.

The ladies on the high end KNOW that they are on the high end. There is no shame in having to be careful about spending in slow economic times. Yes the hobby is how they make their living but it is discretionary spending for any responsible adult. Anyone who gives you a hard time about this isn't really worth worrying about...or seeing.
