What was the best Christmas present you ever received as a child? Reflecting on the question, I can't recall a single present. lol What I do remember clear as day is helping my brother put up the trains while watching Christmas specials on television. So I guess my brother is the best Christmas present I've ever had.

Let me improve the question. What is you most cherished memory from Christmas past?

but nothing could be further from the truth.

But still, despite receiving oodles of great toys that go played with for a few days and then discarded, often beyond repair, the best and most meaningful gift I got was a stapler.  Yes, a stapler.

To a 6 year old, the ability of adults to join two pieces of paper together held some kind of fascination for me that somehow I connected owning a stapler with some kind of rite of passage to adulthood.

When I found that stapler in my Christmas stocking one morning my heart jumped for joy.

And, unlike every other Christmas or Hanukkah gift I got over the years, that stapler is still in my desk drawer, and used nearly every week when I pay bills.

It was an "atrial septal defect" for you cardiologists in the house.

I thought I must have been the "goodest little boy" on the planet with all the toys Santa left under the tree for me. All Christmas Day it was a never ending line of relatives and friends of the family coming too visit.
Very 'Norman Rockwell/Frank Capra' if you get the drift.

Considering the "Heart-Lung" machine had only recently been perfected, and that I have healthily survived this long thereafter makes Christmas 1961 very special in my mind.

dad had built a fire. I was three years old, and my dad let me open a Christmas present because I was scared of the storm.

I felt one that was all soft on the inside, so I opened it and it was---- THE RACCOON HAT I WANTED ALL YEAR FROM THE MALL!----

I named it TJ and wore it to school, brought it everywhere with me. Then one day I lost it in a campground bathroom. I cried there three hours home, and any time anyone tried to replace it… it just wasn't the same.

RIP My TJ lol

Best gift ever! I just can't remember if that was actually early Christmas morning or on a snow day from school. I was three, but anyway…

We traveled around a lot growing up, and the one constant for me was my family. This was especially important during middle and high school, when transferring to a new school was especially difficult (if you've ever been the quiet new kid you understand). So many many great Christmas memories. The breakfast mom made, the music dad put on was the same ever year. Just so comforting.

But I very much remember the best Christmas present I've ever received.  A Shogun Warrior. The one that shot the battle axe fist.  THAT was a great Christmas present (and yes I realize I'm dating myself lol). :)

I was 13 yrs old and I wanted to be cool. Shocker. I wanted an ankle bracelet but my mom had said no. You would think I was asking for a tattoo. She said I was too young. When Christmas came around, we didn't always do presents, most years we just did the nativity scene but there were a few years we did. Well, this year we did and when she handed me the little box and I saw it was an anklet with elephant pendants hanging on it (her seal of approval), I couldn't believe it. It was the best present I had ever gotten. She died a couple of years later but not without making sure I was a cool girl first.

My ex had always liked the rusty metal sculptures you'll often see at art fairs. I'd made her a few over the years, but decided that for Christmas I wanted to make one that was very special.

She had a pair of art deco candle holders that she loved. They were white doves standing with their heads bowed, beaks pointed down, and their wings swept up behind them.

I photographed those to make an outline of the body of a dove, and to make outlines of the two wings. I then enlarged the outlines to make the birds three feet tall.

I made three doves, cutting the three bodies and six wings from sheets of steel using a plasma cutter. They had to be exactly the same, so I had to be very careful.

I made a 30" wide bowl by taking a round piece of steel, heating it until it was glowing red, and then hammering on it with a ball peen hammer. (This is the way that Caribbean steel drums are made). It took a full day to hammer out the bowl.

I then heated the wings to give each one a bit of an outward curve from the bottom to the top. Then I welded the wings to the bodies, and placed the bodies facing outwards in a circle (so, 120 degrees from each other). I welded the bowl to the very upper tips of the wings. I made a steel ring for a base, and welded the bottom of the bodies to the base.

It turned out very well. It looked art deco, but also had the metal sculpture feel she liked.

After she went to bed Christmas Eve, I sneaked into the garage where I'd hidden the sculpture, and put it out in her garden where it could be seen from the window.

On Christmas morning she looked out the window, saw the sculpture, and was speechless.

It took me three days to make that, but it was worth it.

I was 8 or 9 yrs old and in Oct. I was asked by my mom what I wanted for XMas, told her I wanted a Schwin String Ray bike ( they just came out). Well Xmas day I wake up with my 3 sisters go to the living room look around, NO FUCKING STING RAY BIKE, but many other presents. Parents wake up and we start opening the presents. Everyone I opened I would say things like "who got me this stupid gift?" or " this is dumb, I didnt want this" after driving my sisters to tears upsetting my mom to no end my hung over father had enough told me to gather up all the used wrapping and take them out to the trash in the garage. Me pissing and moaning, grabbing stuff, bumping into my sisters announcing "THIS IS THE WORST XMAS EVER and telling my youngest sister as I walked out the door to the garage "that there really wasnt a Santa Claus" she was heart broken and dumb founded, so out I go with the trash open the garage door and sitting in the garage is my brand new Sting Ray Bike. How do spell Schmuck?

Merry Christmas Devin , and may the new year be one filled with joy for you ..xoxo..

You couldn't get one anywhere, they were sold out. My whole family is from BK and they had access to all the 'truck's' that certain items used to fall off from.... they waited until all the presents were open and hid it so that I didn't find it until the last moment. I opened it up and she even had the same name as me, I was so happy I cried.

I think I was around 11 and had been hinting,(snivvling?) that all the other kids had a bicycle. Then about a week before Christmas there was an ad in the paper for a "Monky Wards" bike. I said gee that is really ugly not nearly as "swell" as the Western Auto Flyer. My Dad went to Wards the next day and cancled the Bike he had on layaway and went to Western Auto and bought the one I had said was so neat. My mom told me about that a few years later and showed me the paper work on it. I loved that bike but not nearly as much as I loved my parents.

My father worked EVERY X-mas, so we always celebrated on X-mas Eve, and then X-mas morning, would get our little stocking stuffers and 1-2 extra presents from our parents. So, every X-mas Eve, we'd all pile in the car, and drive around to look at X-mas lights….when we came home, the presents from Santa were always under the tree…soot from his boots outside the fireplace..and the cookies & milk had been eaten. Well, if my parents were driving around with us in the car, then there HAD to be a Santa. When we got old enough, my mom disclosed that the neighbors, who had a key, would come over when we pulled out, bring the presents down, make a mess of the hearthstone, and eat the cookies & milk, lol.

But, they tricked us for YEARS…then around age 11, we got to start going with our mom to pick out our presents(in addition to a few extra that actually were surprises).

My Dad was a doctor in a small town in Michigan.. He was a GP that did everything .. including deivering babies, doing surgery .. ER duty.. everything..

There were 5 kids in my family.. I was the oldest.. One Christmas morning.. probably way too early (we were all eager) we were all opening Christmas presents.. throwing paper all over the place.. The cats were playing in the empty boxes and the all of the dogs had sticky bows on their head.. All of a sudden there was a banging & yelling on the front door.. I remember it was dark out (early before the sun was up) so that got our attention.. My Mom went to the front door  and yelled for my Dad.. There was a girl there with a man (turned out to be her Dad) who was in the last stages of labor.. "Doc you have to help us !".. Dad asked them why they didn't go to the hospital.. "You were closer and we figgered you would be up since you got so many young kids " (Good figuring.. ).. so as we watched.. surrounded by Christmmas morning debris.. we watched the miracle of birth.. My Mom helped.. I grabbed towels and so on.. and Dad delivered a screaming baby boy on the carpet in front of the fire place.. Since we all thought originally it was Santa Claus banging on the front door and he had stopped by to make a second delivery.. The Baby was named Chris (as in Chris Cringle).  That was a vey memorable and special Christmas.. I develped a huge respect for my Dad that morning.. He just went ahead.. unfazed.. and the ambulance came just after the baby was delivered.. and Dad went back to being Dad.. trying on his new sweater and showing us how the new toy train worked..

on the way home we parked somewhere out of the way.  She undressed in the backseat & laid her floor length gown over the front.  Proceeded to put footprints in the headliner but it was worth it.  I was finding bobbie pins for the remaining life of that car.

That's right.. He died in his sleep a few years ago, at 87.. 2 days after Christmas, so, of course, I think of him a lot about now.. He was a practicing physician at 21.. delivered over 7,000 babies during his career.. So every Christmas is now pretty special.. What I do and what most people do every day.. compares poorly with what he did every day.. Growing up in a Country Doctors home had it's quirks.. Hardly ever had a Thansgiving without the door bell ringing and someone needing some stiches when they cut themselves carving their turkey..

we had the most amazing Christmas season that seemed to go on forever: we lived on Long Island at the time and went to stay in the city with visits to St. Pats, the tree in Rockefeller Center, ice skating, 5th avenue, and saw Disney's Robin Hood at Radio City just to name a few.  Back home and Christmas Day was everything we wanted and more, a kid's paradise.  My mother was handed a death sentence shortly before that Christmas and she thought she might not make it to the next one so she wanted to make it wonderful and memorable - she was right, and mission accomplished.  Thanks, mom.
