It's inappropriate for the doctor to ask WHY so many sexual partners.  She may have suspected what you do for a living but if she were behaving professionally she would have withheld her judgements and simply tried to give you good info about STDs and protection.

Do I tell my doc what I do for a living?  Sometimes.  I did tell my doctor, got a world of threats and judgement dumped on me, and found another doctor.  This one was really supportive and helped me without judging.  She didn't flinch when I needed to have graphic discussions and seemed comfortable in general.

For reasons I won't go into I had to change docs and this time I am holding back the details of my profession.  I simply hold my doc that I have a lot of partners.  (At which point she scribbled frantically into my chart).

I test every 3 months.

I use tstd.org. Completely anonymous, and you get the results online. It's also a lot quicker than two weeks. It's a day or two to get the results. I'm married, and I don't want lab results to come in the mail where my wife can open them (yes, that happened once). I also don't want anyone to have a record of my STD tests or results.

Please everyone, even if you always cover and never have an accident, still get tested periodically for STD's and HIV!!

I had a doc once start to grill me on 'why' I got tested 2x a year.... I told her even tho I wasn't high risk it solely made me feel better.

Really.. its no ones business , that doctor is working for me and sometimes people like that forget their place.  Very annoying.  People are so use to bowing to authority figures they start to treat docs like it's there MOM and Dad and they are 3yrs old.  But the reality is they are my employee while I'm there and if they annoy me or give me issue I'll hire someone else.

I don't say this because of we are in a risk group for STDs, I actually think the civvies are the risk group. I say because of all the other gyno problems that comes along with a heavy sexual life, like infections, cancer , YES cancer!!!!
Because woman who are very active sexually are more susceptible to have cervical cancer than the normal girls.
Telling your doctor will only make him be more careful and attentive with you, scheduling exams (not only std tests all other tests too) more often and paying more attention to you.

If I ever feel that I can't be totally honest with any one of them, I immediately start looking to replace them.

One other point on the same subject, I don't allow "lectures" from any of the professional in my employ. I expect to be told the consequences for my actions, I don't want to hire a "moral compass". I will immediately fire anyone who feels entitled to lecture me, and I have done so on many an ocassion, the last time only a few weeks ago. I hired a lawyer who thought his law degree entitled him to give me "free advice" on how to run my personal life. I fired him in mid sentence, firmly and not too politely. lol

I have been in healthcare in various capacities since the early ninties. While I respect your desires to manage your own healthcare, I would point out that it is a highly skilled profession that amateurs should not be dicking around with.

You know the legal expression "one who represents himself has a fool for a client"? It goes double for medicine. When you lie to a doctor or try to strongarm them into doing stuff, you jeopardize your own medical health. That said, prostitution is illegal as we all know, so complete honesty is a risk, the statement about CPS was very insightful. There is something to be said for leaving out details that are not crucial to medical decision making.

That practioner was doing exactly what they were supposed to do.


Where you got your test is the reason for the inquiry: " nurse practioner at the health department." Such health providers are charged with a different set of concerns -- Public Health issues -- which dictate thier approach with each patient. You might expect the experience to be different a private practitioner, but at a Health Dept.


The public health facilities where I have been employed provided specific training to the practioners to ask such questions and to be on the watch for signs that a man or woman may be a prostitute, or are involved in "high-risk" activity (they won't actually say "slut" or "manwhore" lol!) If they can determine this, or if they are instructed to make sure that person has correct information about health risks, disease transmission, safety practices, and knows about all the resourses available in the area. They do this as Puiblic Health Policy, which is not something your private PCP has on the forefront of his or her agenda.

As a side note, these agencies are mostly under county governments, and report to the same board as the sheriff. While that may sounds alarming, the Health and LE agencies do not work together in such a way that if you admitted being a prostitute at the Health Dept, that information would be passed along to LE.

I actually go to a doctor whose clinic is known for providing safe and reasonable health care ( I have insurance, but some ladies that work don't) and he knows what I do and how many partners I see every month when I get tested for everything.
