So I have been using my primary cell phone for the hobby for over 10 years. I was considering a hobby phone and bought a tracfone for $5 new. Have not bought minutes yet. So the question is if I have used my main cell phone for the last 10 years and have been verified by that number, if I use a hobby phone number, will the verification be the same, or more questions raised?  And if I let my hobby phone minutes lapse and get another hobby phone number, will it screw things up more

is important. That's how the ladies know you. In their address book they often enter an "OK", "great" etc against your name. So if you are great you will get preference. A new number may not be answered and will go to voice mail.
You will also have to change your phone with the verification services. It's a hassle, but getting a hobby phone is a must and keeping the number is a smart thing to do.
But why did you not have a hobby phone for so long?

I'm single, not married,  no kids and lazy.  I wonder if I ask my references that I will also use another number, would they help?

Real life to the hobby life. Why would you want something that can be easily  traced back to your civvie life?  

I concede , after more thought just bear the pain of changing the refs.

I would just inform your regulars that you are changing your number. Give them some notice or give them the new number while you are with them. 99% chance they just edit your contact in their phone and them poof your old number is gone for good.
