I would LMFAO if I were to get a letter like that. I don't really have any secrets. Not that no one has ever tried to blackmail me before, but no one has ever been so vague about it. Of course I do remember getting an irate phone call from some guy claiming he was going to kill me if I didn't stop fucking his wife. When I stopped laughing at his dumb ass, I told him he needed to be a LOT more specific as I was fucking a lot of different women. It turned out that he was the ex husband of an SB I was seeing, he had broken into her computer and accessed all of our PM's. I had a bit of fun with him, including taunting him that his daughter was now calling me Daddy and reminded him about what a loser he was for not being able to "keep his woman" until he got tired of me abusing him and he went away of his own accord.

They claimed they had all of his PM's and photos he posted on the site. His main concern was that one of the threats would be that they would send all of their "evidence" to his neighbors if he didn't pay. I went through the letter with him and showed him how it was all a big bluff. He didn't post any photos and he used a screen name that nobody can prove is his. Also, only the credit card info, including the billing address, was stolen, not the communications with other members. I convinced him to ignore it and after a few months, it all stopped and went away. He was on the verge of coming clean with his wife as the best alternative. Talk about a lose-lose.

I own a few companies, and have great people managing them for me, which affords me the LUXURY of being able to sit in my office in front of two computers, one logged onto our company servers so I can monitor what's going on, and the other one logged onto TER. I DO work about 25 hours a week, which is why my time spent with hookers is only 6-8 hours a week on average. You might be looking at a spam. I know a few providers that have received the same type of e-mail and it's possible that a mined mailing list from a newer classified type site may be the source. I'm pretty sure that everyone has a "secret" of some sort and everyone will read into it what they will. There has been all kinds of BS scams like this going on. I've had several clients contact me about the same thing in recent days and it all seems to lead back to one unfortunate trail. Sadly, I can't call anyone out and jeopardize being attacked directly. However, it may not be a coincidence that crypto "brokers" seem to be behind the scenes of this group.
Providers continue to scramble for work and signing up wherever possible to see what works. Fortunately, not putting real info into the hands of the unknown is a rule of thumb that works for everyone to prevent crap like this.
Hopefully things will get better for us all over time and we will soon discover our new norm.

I got one of these a few years ago. Pretty sure they are sending the same mass email to the Ashley Madison list that circulated back a few years ago. If this was an email they sent you and not a letter with any detail, they likely don't have your address, your real name... much of anything.
Ignore it; they have nothing. If they did, they would have detailed it in the message.
If they actually knew anything, they would have specifically told you what. Ignore it.

A very nice Indian man from Microsoft Tech Support called me this morning to alert me of a dangerous situation with my computer. He was very helpful and seemed so genuinely concerned for my well being that I asked his opinion.
He strongly encouraged me to pay. Apparently in his country, your wife and mistress can be stoned by village elders if you commit adultery. So now I need to come up with $10,000 in just a few more days as it seems the Nigerian prince's uncle can't get me the funds from his oil venture in time.
I'm thinking of sending an email to all the providers I've seen over the last 10 years - sort of a private invite GoFundMe. Wish me luck. I'm really hopeful that they come through for me.

As I recall, the Ashley Madison hack of a few years ago linked credit card info with user posting data. It caused several public figures to be exposed, so it was real. My info got out there too and I got the blackmail letters. In this case there were so many that they didn't concentrate on any particular people. So it was safe to ignore them, as they would spend their time on those who bit.
2 years later and there is still some fishy stuff going on with Ashley Madison I'm sure. There's no way that they recovered from the massive data hack.
