LMAO, it really wasn't the wives it was the "religious" community who outlawed prostitution in the US.  It was legal up until something like the early 1900's when they finally outlawed it.

There are a number of states in the US that make dildos or sex toys illegal (old laws still on the books), and some even outlaw anyone have more than one.  In all honesty these laws are now used to "up" charges on prostitutes when caught.  The more charges they can add there stiffer the punishment and penalty
