I don't get all caught up in the differing names we give these things. I am not sure why you are troubled by it.

Webster has this as one of the definitions.   If you look at the larger meaning of "date" a social date is only one aspect

 an appointment to meet at a specified time
set up a date with her lawyer

I think of it as a session, as I’m more interested in the physical aspects of the session than the mental aspects! In fact, I have had fantastic sex with girls who barely speak any English.
