I'm relatively new to the boards (1.5 years) and I've noticed most regional boards do not allow aliases for obviously various and assorted reasons. So the use of aliases here on TER intrigues me. Not so much the reason for using them, but more specifically, the ability of members to recognize an alias. My question is this: How do you know the individual posting is using an alias? I have noticed that those being accused of using an alias have no reviews or email address. Is that the only indicator? Or are there other demographical indicators (such as locals recognizing the syntax and personality)? -e

for example...Look at your post or mine even since we are here.  I have a link to my reviews and also a small envelope so you can PM if needed.  When someone post with an alias it shows only the name with no envelope or review link, if it's a provider.  

I like seeing different alias that people use...ie the funny names they come up with.  But I also find that when a lot people have something to say that may be negative or just funny for the sake (sp LOL) or the post, they will use an alias as to not "out themselves" or just be funny.  I also find it very intrigueing that people use alias here and not in "other" places but that also sets TER aside from "all the other places."    Either way it's a freedom a lot exercise and some don't like myself, unless I am trying to be funny with the post.

when I post I don't make comments like, "please no alias" or "alias is ok" or even post under an alias unless I am trying to be funny.  I love to see how everyone makes their remarks, and I find it very funny at times.  Like I said some still tend to "hide behind" an alias in order to not "out themselves" while making comments.  But I think TER intended the alias for people who would comment to a post and be funny.  I could be wrong but who will ever know heheheheheh.  I still find it funny either way.

I enjoy the ceative aliases that i see so often on this and other TER Boards.

My only reservation about them is when folks use them to deliver a withering personal attack on another.

And yes, they are useful for expounding a very unpopular position, which i have done on an occassion or two.  But mostly I try to use them for some type of [imagined?] comedic effect.

...more than anything for security.  Personally, I live in a pretty conservative area - call it the Baptist Bible Belt - rather than in a more liberal area where The Hobby might be better tolerated.  I don't use them to flame anybody.

Let's be real about this - LE monitors this site.  Call it paranoia or whatever, but in my situation I don't really travel much, so I don't get to see ladies in other cities too much.  Therefore, most of my reviews (which I don't do anymore) are from my home range.  So the use of my TER handle, along with my reviews, tends to create a "fingerprint" if you will...

I have a different alias I use for every different forum - and change them often.

Because I am very new to providing and I have a lot of naïve questions. While I did not have a sheltered life, it was not the kind of life from which one would acquirer “street smarts.” I would not want somebody to read my questions and think of me as an easy target to take advantage of. It is for my safety and I have never made an incendiary comment using an alias.

Outside of a few people I've seen who know my real world identity, nobody here knows who I am so what is the difference?

I mean, I could be George Bush or Bill Clinton as far as anybody knows.

But that being said, some of the aliases used have a fine sense of irony and satire, so there's no harm either and some value I guess.

...partially on your hobbying habits.  If you primarily only see one provider then your identity - and your TER handle - is narrowly restricted.  However, if you broadly hobby, the more providers you see the more your identity is in the public domain, the less anonymity you have.  People talk.  This also depends on the range of hobbying habit.  If your range of hobbying is restricted to a 50 mile radius, then your anonymity is further compromised.

If I were LE, I would monitor reviews in my locale.  I might watch who hobbys the most, perhaps looking for a "big fish".  Let's say this individual, by way of profiling their reviews, likes latina spinners.  Then I could conceivably set up this fish for a bust.

I dunno...that's just my line of thought.  I don't believe anonymity remains intact unless one continuously morphs the identity.

Your TER handle does not have to be told to anyone. You don't have to tell any provider you see what your TER handle is. Thus the only person in the world who would know your real name in connection to a TER handle would be you.

You and your TER handle can be inferred.  Furthermore, some on line appointment forms specifically ask for your TER handle.  I had a local agency screen me based upon my TER handle.

And hey, if the lady's hot, you're probably goint to give it out.

I would think LE, while monitoring this and other sites, is usually more interested in making as many busts and seizing as much cash and valuable items as possible, rather than targeting specific individuals.  From both a cost effectiveness and publicity standpoint, numbers would trump nailing one particular indivual in most instances, as LE and the media like to portrait the hobby in the sleaziest and most unseemly manner possible, while maximizing the take from their operations.  Hence, the stings that are mostly targeted at CL and other sites that cater to the lower end of the hobby spectrum.  As for who knows you in the community under your "real" handle, and can attach your name to it, only those providers who you have revealed this to, and perhaps a few others if you go to M&G's and hobby related gatherings.  If you are really paranoid, you should avoid these completely (strip clubs, too), as it is possible that you will run into others there that you know from outside the hobby...has happened to me at both.  Otherwise, even if you use your "real" handle here to post commentary, who really knows who you are?  One thing I would not do, though, is use my TER handle in other, non-hobby related forums.  I know of at least one TER member whose handle is used elsewhere outside the hobby, and I suspect it is the same person.   Just my two pennies...have a good one...

Naw, CD, not me.  I'm not paranoid - just been around enough to know that in the Hobby you're never really secure.

Case and point:  An internationally notorious event occured a few years ago involving a lady who is purported to have been working for an agency.  This has only recently come to light (that the woman worked for the agency), and now the question becomes whether or not that agency is going to be the subject of scrutiny, along with it's clients, many who have posted reviews here before knowing their was an association between the event and the agency (actually all the reviews have taken down by TER).  

I'm being deliberately vague, but you get the point.   Of course, it's up to the individual, but I never mix my TER handle via reviews with posts on any regional or discussion board.

The forms ask, you don't HAVE to tell. If an agency asks for your TER handle you, again, don't have to tell. I am sure there are thousands of gentlemen out there who get screened in agencies and by indy girls who have never even heard of TER.

If you are so paranoid of a girl "inferring" who you are by a review or something then just wait a month or two before posting the review. I am pretty sure that unless the girl only sees 2 guys a month that she won't remember your real name in connection with your TER handle.

Just because a lady is hot is no reason to give her any information you don't want. If you don't want her to know your TER handle then don't tell her.

Besides, TER is fictional stories anyway. If LE is here trying to find people then all they are reading are stories.

For those that don't remember my announcement about a year ago, I'm the former jjackflash!  As such, I preached LOUDER THAN ANYBODY about how chickenshit it was to use an alias.  The whole "your TER username IS an alias, what do you need another one for?" line was MY MANTRA.  Then I got snagged (not by LE, worse than that), so I had to change my I.D. to keep playing.  After awhile I returned.  Still wanting people (certain people, at least) to know who I am, I continued by posting using jjackflash, which I had converted to my alias when I changed my username.  I hated that it was "now an alias", but I felt it was the only way to not feel so hypocrytical.  Then after nearly getting busted again (again worse than LE), I realized that I was being a total dumbass.  So, I retired "jjackflash" and announced my new handle.  Even though it's technically an alias, and I do feel a bit hypocrytical for using it (hence my announcements), I've come to appreciate why people feel the NEED to use them.

You can express a simple idea in a coherent sentence.  That lets you off the hook.
