Having practically flunked statistics in college, I would have to say that, on the subject of percentage of population, I'm dumb as a post. That said, I'm not holding out much hope for hobbyists to come together as a political force for change (or anything else for that matter). This, in light of the fact that our common bond is still illegal as all hell in at least 49 states. Not to mention that a healthy percentage of hobbyists are muhh, muhh (I'm sorry; I just can't say it). Surreptitious, like it or not, is still the smart way to go; especially if your someone's employee, a politician and/or high profile.
My guess is around 15,000 to 20,000. Here is the way I arrived at the estimate. I looked at the major websites advertising ladies in the Boston area. There are around 300 different people advertising. Dividing through by the Mass population and projecting the rate uniformly over the US gives something around the 20k figure. NOTE!!! This is probably an OVERSTATEMENT of the #s. There will be proportionally more providers in areas with higher population densities (more people, more customers, more providers).
Others -- check your own area. The US Population is around 290m people.
The TER counts are suspect since they include people who are visiting and those will be double counted.
My first point would be, that you can't just use the internet -- there are tons of down-and-out women doing a few tricks for their drug fix, and some college girls who let word get around the dormitories for the nerds and geeks to get off for money, too. Maybe a fairly accurate count, of how many "full time professional internet-based providers" there are, or something like that.
Second, I'd like to know how many JOHNS there are. Are we hobbyists radically outnumbered or not? The religious new right seems to think we are, and we are hampered in the fact that we don't feel as comfortable airing our opinions about sexual politics publicly, considering that we are doing things that are "illicit." But maybe our VOTES could still be counted (hey, nobody can see inside a polling booth ...), and it would be nice to be able to muster that support somehow, and know what would be a sensible number to expect at the mustering-in.
